“I need to say something to you, but I’m afraid. It’s not something I share with many people because it can’t get back to my parents.”

“What’s so awful about your parents?”

“They’re not awful. But they are conservative. My father is a minister at the Pentecostal church in Smithtown. They believe the old testament when it comes to homosexuality. I know Jesus saved us from all that, but they believe it’s still a sin.”

“Oh! Are you a lesbian?” Lisa asked, looking at her sidelong.

Lily looked around nervously. “I have those desires. In college, my roommate and I were lovers, but I haven’t acted on the impulse since then. There hasn’t been the opportunity. Babylon isn’t exactly a mecca for gay people.”

Something stirred in Lisa, an old desire ignored for years. It might be fun. It might be useful to get Lily to expose that side. It might make Ryan, Alison and Lisa’s trio look less illicit.

“Can you imagine how Dan would feel if he lost another girlfriend to me?” Lisa laughed out loud.

“I don’t get it.”

“I could help you discover that part of yourself,” Lisa whispered. “It would have to be in secret, of course.”

A sickening wave of heat spread through Lisa’s body. Why would she expose herself like this? It would make anything Lily might say about Ryan worse.

“Because Ryan would be upset?”

Lily had flushed again, imagining being in bed with Lisa.

“I’m just teasing you, Lily. I wouldn’t betray Ryan like that. Anyway, he’d probably want to join in,” Lisa said, chuckling. “Dan, too. We don’t want Dan in our heads.”

“Dan’s awful. He’s supposed to be a lawyer, and he defended you and your sister and Ryan. It literally made me ill.”

“Lily, that’s awful. Listen to what you just said. Ryan and I make you ill. Why would I even bother with you after that?”

“I’m sorry! It’s ingrained. I’m trying to change the way I think. I mean, I told Dan I was sorry, but he didn’t believe I could change my mind.”

The bells over the door rang, and a group of customers walked in.

“I’d better get back to work.” She leaned closer. “Do you want to get together again?”

“I’ll call you here at the shop when I can get away. It’s better if we don’t text or email, just in case.”

Winking at Lily, Lisa didn’t know why she was setting her up, teasing her. Not intending on getting sexually involved with her, Lisa just wanted to make sure her family was safe from scandal and prison.

“I agree. My mother has been known to drop by my apartment and read my texts when my back is turned.”

“Ugh, that’s awful. I’m so sorry.”

“Don’t be. I’m used to it. She didn’t speak to me for a year when she found out I slept with a guy. I’m sure I’d be disowned if they found out I was with a woman.”

Lily got up. “You’ll come by again sometime soon, I hope.”

Lily’s look was one of desire, but also of fear. Lisa played into it. “It’ll be fun,” she whispered. “Like I said, don’t tell Dan, or he’ll try to join us.”

“That might be interesting.”

“Lily, swear to me.”

“I swear, I’m just kidding. He’s got the biggest mouth of any guy I’ve ever known.”

“I really just want to get to know you,” Lisa said. “There’s nothing wrong with that, is there? And then if anything develops…”

“Well, I guess we’ll have to see if we ever have the opportunity.”
