“Goodnight, everyone,” she said.

The stone steps leading from the porch were a little wobbly, and Dan imagined falling flat on his face in front of Mr. Personality, but he managed, reaching for the car door for Rene.

He walked around the front of this car and got in, looking up at the door. “Your father’s a real character.”

“Yeah, he’s a big pain in the ass. Thank you for not being offended. I’ve had guys get into fights with my dad.”

“I don’t have to see him again, do I? I mean, can we just meet next time?”

“Yes, if there’s a next time, we can just meet.” She laughed out loud. “So! What are we doing?”

“I thought dinner and dancing if you don’t mind a barbeque joint.”

“Barbeque is fine. I wore white jeans and a light-yellow top because I knew we’d be eating something messy.”

He glanced over at her and grinned. “I like your top.” It was low cut and showed a lot of tan cleavage. “What’s in the bag?”

“Clothes for the weekend. I’m hoping you’ll invite me to stay.”

Looking at her again, he grinned and shook his head. “I just said to myself that I wasn’t going to jump into bed with you because I want to give it a chance if we can stand each other.”

“We don’t have to have sex. That’s not what I meant. I feel like an ass now.”

“I’m sorry, don’t feel that way.” He took her hand. “You say spend the weekend to a guy, and he thinks sex. It’s human nature. Just like a middle-aged guy pulls up on a motorcycle, and you say ER.”

“Ha! Well, thank you for not pulling up on a motorcycle.”

“Would you have broken our date?”

“No! I’d take my own car and follow you.”

He took her hand and brought it to his lips.

“Aw, you kissed my hand? Wow.”

He drove for a while, and they didn’t say much, making small talk about their days since they last saw each other.

“We can drop your bag off at my house,” he said. “I’m always waiting for my car to get stolen at the roadhouse.”

“Oh lord, the famous roadhouse?”

“Why, you’ve been?”

“No, it’s not a place where single women go. It’s all couples, so there’s no one to dance with.”

“Tonight, you dance with me, and I like to dance.”

“I bet you look fine on the dance floor, too.” Although she really meant it, a little flattery might propel things in her direction.

“You’ll have to make that decision for yourself.”

The parking lot was filling up, usual for a Friday night. Up near the front, Jake’s stupid monster truck took two spaces.

“Great.”

“What?”

“I know that guy, and he’s a douche.”
