The second time was just as wonderful, and the thought kept going through her head,Don’t get sucked in. He probably does this to all his women.

While she was parsing Dan’s attributes, he was thinking about how much Rene looked like Pam. It was obvious he was trying to replace Pam. With that knowledge, he’d do his best to focus on Rene and try to find out more about her.

When the second set was over, Rene was hooked, but she was also spent, emotionally exhausted, disgusted with herself for falling so fast. A week of phone conversations and one dance.

“I’ll be back,” she said when they reached the table. “Ladies’ room.”

He nodded at her. “You want me to walk you over there?”

“Really?”

“Yes.”

“Okay.”

He took her hand, and they walked to the restrooms. She went through the door in a fog. Washing her hands in the sink, the cold water felt good, waking her up from the trance she was in. It was always great at the start, she thought, looking into the mirror. But never like this.

“You’re desperate, girlfriend,” she muttered at her reflection.

Like he said, he was waiting for her when she came out. Reaching out for his hand, they held on tight.

“Do you want to leave?”

“Yes. I’m ready to go home.” She quickly explained, “I could have a coffee, that might make me pick up the pace.”

“It’s okay. It’s been a long week. I’m ready to go, too. We’ll order something when we get home.”

He threw bills on the table, and with his arm slung around her shoulder, they walked out into the night.

Saturday morning, they sat on opposite ends of the couch, legs side by side, and he had her feet in his hands, giving her a foot massage that was fabulous while he rooted for his team.

There was a game on the TV, and she didn’t care. She wanted to be with him, and when she got sick of the TV, she got her ereader out and stuck earbuds in and listened to the book she was currently reading. There were no distractions, no mother nagging her, no bored single girlfriends admonishing her for staying in another Saturday. She was going to stay glued to this couch and this guy until a red flag made her take notice, and not until then would she leave.

Around noon, his doorbell rang. “This is probably my kid,” he said. “I take her every Saturday afternoon.”

She’d invited herself for the weekend, the kid coming was a surprise, but she’d deal with it. A tall, slender redhead walked in with a toddler throwing herself at Dan.

“Shannon, this is Rene Johnson. Rene, meet Margaret’s nanny, Shannon. And this is Margaret.”

“Oh god, is she cute,” Rene said.

“Wait,” the nanny said in a thick Irish accent. “She’s a wild child.”

The little girl had Dan’s brown skin, but she was definitely Asian with large almond eyes and jet-black hair as straight as an arrow.

“My boys will be here shortly,” Dan said. “We’ll take them to visit the youngest boy’s mother at my family farm.”

“You will get the whole story eventually,” Shannon said, laughing. “Dan, you should warn a girl.”

“You’re okay with this, right?” he asked, bending over her to kiss her. “It’s Daddy Saturday.”

“I’m fine with it,” she answered, looking up at him. “A girl invites herself for the weekend, she takes what she can get.”

“We only get the nanny for Margaret. The boys’ nanny will stay with their sisters. They’re not much trouble. McDonald’s and a can of Lysol and we’re good. They’ll spend the night at the farm.”

Shannon laughed out loud. “He’s not kidding.”

So they would have a farm adventure. She sat back and watched him playing with his daughter, the nanny taking a little break. He didn’t include Rene in the child play, and she was grateful. If something happened between them that was real, she’d get to know his children then. In the meantime, she would silently observe. It wouldn’t be difficult to be a dad for a few hours a week. How did that happen? When they were alone, when the time was right, she’d investigate that further.
