“Dan, it doesn’t work that way.”

“Look, we got through the summer, and you only had this happen once where you were unable to get out on time. I’ll focus on that.”

They reached his house, and after she went through the door, he took one last look at Pam’s house.

Across the street, Lisa was waiting for Dan to get inside so she could leave. Ryan was finally sleeping, and she was sneaking out to meet Lily. They’d met for coffee, and Lily always wanted to talk about Ryan. Lisa’s plan was to turn Lily’s attention to their “budding romance,” as she called it.

“Aw, forget about Ryan,” Lisa said. “What about us?”

“Tell me what you want,” Lily whispered, leaning closer.

“Well, I’d like it if we could get together sometime, but it would have to be on the sly.”

“Yes, for me too. The last thing I need is for my parents to get wind of this. I’m free unless I’m at work,” Lily said. “You name the time.”

They began seeing each other, only after Ryan fell asleep. The antidepressants he took along with a sleeping aid insured that he was out cold by midnight, some nights sooner. He didn’t always stay asleep though, which made it tricky. She’d feel safe out for about an hour.

Doing it to distract Lily at first, it got out of hand when they began meeting. The initial reason for engaging her was only to protect her family. But now, Lisa found herself thinking of Lily’s body when they weren’t together. With a build unlike any woman Lisa had known, Lily’s full figure invited contemplation, and she couldn’t wait to explore it. Guilt juxtaposed desire and Lisa wondered if she wasn’t having some kind of mental breakdown.

“Just come to my apartment,” Lily had said.

“No, I really can’t do that. I can’t walk into town. It would be better for me if you’d meet me on the beach.”

That summer at the meetings on the beach, they spent time getting to know one another and, Lisa hoped, understanding one another. Putting all of her effort into trying to reason with Lily and convince her that Ryan was innocent wasn’t working. By August, Lisa was feeling a combination of hopelessness and fear. One night when she was unable to show up at their meeting place because Madelyn was running a fever, Lily came to the cottage and rang the doorbell at midnight.

Lisa got to it before it woke up Ryan.

“I’m going to call the police, Lily. This is getting out of hand. You can’t come to my house. Ever. I don’t care if you do report us.”

“I’m sorry. I need to see you tonight.”

“I can’t, Lily. I would have been there if I could. Go home. I’ll try to make it tomorrow.”

“I love you,” Lily pleaded.

“You can’t love me and threaten me like this.”

“I’m sorry. Promise you’ll meet me tomorrow.”

“I’ll do my best, Lily, but don’t come here again.”

The following night, after everyone was asleep, Lisa snuck out of the cottage and ran up to the beach access point where she met Lily.

“I’m sorry again about last night. I’m just sad because we can never have more than this. All the LGBTQ rights in the world won’t make my mother and father accept it.”

“Just try to enjoy what we have,” Lisa said. “I’m afraid once the cold weather sets in, it won’t be as easy to get out.”

“I can’t even think of that right now.”

“I know,” Lisa said, leaning back against the table. “Let me make you feel good, Lily.”

They sat together kissing passionately, Lisa threading her fingers up Lily’s shorts until she cried out in pleasure. They held each other for a while until Lisa yawned.

“I’m sorry, I guess I’d better get back home. I’m so tired. School can’t start soon enough.”

“Can I touch you before we leave tonight?” Lily asked.
