“Don’t worry about that,” he said. “You need to get your pants off if you’re really serious that it’s coming.”

She pulled her pink T-shirt dress up over her belly, and he helped her pull her underpants off.

“This is just great!” she said, crying. “What an introduction. I’ll probably poop, too.”

“That’s okay, honey,” he said. “I’ve seen poop before.

“Get in and I’ll get my phone and call. You need to go to the hospital sometime, and I don’t feel safe driving you with a newborn.”

He laid towels down in the tub and helped her climb in. Then he took a blanket off the bed and brought it to her while calling the station.

“You’ll never believe this,” he told dispatch. “Aisling Saint is having Mike’s baby in my bathtub right now. Can you send a truck around?”

Back in the tub, she was crying out, flailing her hands to grasp his. “It’s coming, Devon. I can’t stop it. I’m so sorry.”

“Don’t worry, just go with it.”

He grabbed more towels out of the closet next to the tub, but didn’t want to leave her to get gloves. His hands were just going to get bloody.

“Can you see if it’s coming? I hope I can get it out. I’m so scared.”

He was on his knees at the side of the tub and pulled her bloody dress up. Everything was right there, including the top of a head that had a lot of hair.

“Aw, this kid has hair, Aisling!”

“Really?” Then she grabbed the side of the tub again and, with a red and contorted face, pulled herself forward and pushed.

Devon remembered from training to hold the baby’s head after it emerged, so he prepared to do that, watching Aisling and keeping one eye on her crotch.

“You’re doing great! The head is almost out! That’s the hardest part.”

“It hurts! I can’t do any more,” she cried.

“One more push and I bet this baby is out.”

She pushed again and Devon supported the baby’s head as the rest of the body slithered out of her. Closing her eyes only for a second, she quickly opened them when she didn’t hear any cries.

Devon rubbed the baby off with a clean towel, stimulating it. “Aw, Ash, it’s a girl!”

At that moment, the baby started to scream. He lifted her onto Aisling’s belly to hold.

“No way! That’s why my ass was so big!”

“I’d better unlock the door for the squad,” he replied, chuckling. “I wonder what’s taking them so long.”

“You just called them five minutes ago,” she said. “You’d better wash your hands.”

He did so and ran to unlock the door. He put the dogs, who looked confused and were sniffing him madly, in his bedroom. When he returned to the bathroom, the placenta had come out.

“Oh God, that thing hurt coming out,” she said, relieved.

“Let me find something to cut the cord. I’ll be right back.”

In the kitchen he found an old ball of string, probably there from when his mother was alive, and scissors that had recently made the trip through the dishwasher. He wiped them off with a bleach wipe, just to be safe.

Back in the bathroom, she’d pulled her dress up over her breasts and had put the baby there to nurse.

“Wow, she’s nursing!” Devon said.
