“They don’t want me to mess up my relationship with Violet’s nanny. I know this is just the beach. No biggie, right? But they might see it differently, and truthfully, my mother can harp.”

“It’s okay with me. I know the age difference will be an issue if people think we’re dating.”

“We are, sort of,” he said. “This is a date. Our trip to Julian was a date. I’m really glad you agreed to see me.”

“We’ll just take it slow.”

“How’d your date go last night?” This was really the question he wanted answered.

“It was good. He’s a nice man.”

“Not impressed with his choice of location,” Leon said, grimacing.

“Ha! He’s not from around here, and he’d heard about their food.”

“They do have amazing food. So are you going to see him again?”

“I might. I guess it depends on what happens today. Are we dating? Or is this just an excuse to do something where you can bring your baby? Having a baby really changes the way you plan a date, I would think.”

“Yeah, I have to bring my kid now, wherever I go, unless you watch her. Ha! Yep, you or my mother. So, like you said, we’ll just take it slow. What does this guy do for a living?”

“He’s a dentist.”

“Ah. A dentist. Probably rich.”

“I don’t know. He’s older, too.”

“Good looking?”

“Sort of. He’s bald. At least I guess he’s bald, because his head was shaved.”

Leon ran his hand over his shaved head for effect, making her laugh out loud, a beautiful sound. “Okay, point taken.”

“I’m the only person in our family besides my mom with light hair. Of course, hers is from a bottle now, but when she was young…”

“I’m not really a redhead,” she said. “You knew that, right?”

“No, I didn’t know. What color is it?”

“Brown. I tan like a bitch, too. You know I wouldn’t be able to sunbathe if I were a real redhead.”

“Why?”

“I’d burn,” she replied, thinking he was really young not to know that. “Redheads have pale skin, so they stay out of the sun. Anyway, we won’t be sunbathing today. But I have an idea.”

“What’s that?”

“I thought we’d rent a room right on the beach. What do you think?”

What he thought was that it was a great idea, but it sounded like it was going to cost more than he had to spend. Feeling like a dope, he’d have to decline.

“It sounds like a perfect plan, but with the apartment coming up and everything…”

“I’ll pay.”

“No way.”

“Leon, coming to the beach today was my idea. Let’s not allow money to be an issue between us. You have a kid to support. My husband left me comfortable. I can spring for a day at the beach, okay? I don’t want to sit on the sand all day. If we have a room, we’ll be comfortable with the baby and have a bathroom.”
