“I’m sorry to hear that,” Jake replied, worry for her growing now. “How safe is your apartment building?”

“It’s safe enough. I don’t go out alone after dark. It’s a reality of city life for a woman.”

She unlocked the door and he followed her inside.

“Are you okay with me hanging around? I mean, did you have plans tonight? It’s pretty bold of me to think you have nothing better to do than hang out with me all week.”

“I’ll need to see my parents soon. They’re excited about hearing about the job. I was going to have dinner with them tonight.”

“Oh, I guess I should think about taking off, then. Do you want to get together later?”

“I’m pretty tired,” she said, not wanting to discourage him, but wanting to be realistic. “Do you want to have breakfast together again tomorrow?”

“I’d like that,” he said. But she could tell he was disappointed.

“I’ll plan something special for us,” she said. “Am I being too bold now?”

“No, not at all. I’m glad you want to see me. I was just trying to figure out what I’d do for the next four days.”

She reached up with her hand on his shoulder and kissed his cheek.

“I’m all sweaty,” he said, taking her hand.

“I am too. I smell your soap.”

“That’s standard-issue soap from the firehouse. I’m not sure what brand.”

She continued her bold move that she might later regret and threaded her arms around his shoulders, standing on her toes. Sniffing his neck, she closed her eyes and took his scent in, a combination of the soap from the firehouse, whatever softener he used in the dryer, and him. Man.

Sexual electricity traveled back and forth between them as the length of their bodies pressed together. Big hands traveling around Geri’s tiny waist, Jake pulled her closer, and she felt a substantial erection pressing against her belly. Her knees quivered a little bit at the sensation. It made her want to climb up his body, open her legs, and take him in right there, but she fought the urge. Mouths quickly finding each other, they kissed like guilty lovers.

Chapter 2

The Angel family home was north of the downtown area, and she wound around the mountain roads, clicking her brights on where there were no streetlights, until she arrived at the gate. Happily, they’d lit up the driveway, and she maneuvered in the tight area without trouble, breathing a sigh of relief when the gate shut firmly behind her.

“Here she is,” Gerald called out, waiting at the garage for her. “Greg and Scott are home. Gerry is working tonight. How’d it go?”

“It was good, Dad. We were busy, a couple of calls a day, all brush fires. One two-alarm for brush along the 15 over there by Lake Hodge.”

“That place got wiped out pretty bad by the Witch Fire about ten years ago. Do you remember that? I was gone for a week and it was right here.”

“I remember.”

“Your mother has dinner ready. She was worried all day that it would be something you might not eat.”

“Dad, when did I ever not eat what she cooked?”

“You’re always worried about your weight now. It’s chicken and some kind of vegetable. Just do me a favor and eat something so she doesn’t keep me up whining all night.”

“I’ll eat. I cooked at the firehouse, too. Mom’s corned beef. They all loved it.”

“Be sure to tell her,” he said. “She’s acting a little depressed because she didn’t hear from you.”

“Okay, Dad, I’ll try to be more attentive. I thought she was over it. I moved out a month ago.”

“She is, but she lives and breathes for your next escapade.”

“It’s time for Mom to get a life, Dad. Her kids are grown and working. Now you two can finally relax.”
