“No. I did it specifically because we’re dating. I want to be with you and not have my every move questioned, and the only way that can happen is if I move out. It was time.”

He unlocked the door and pushed it open, standing aside so she could walk in. Although it was sparsely furnished, there was enough to be comfortable.

“Wow, you have furniture already. I didn’t expect this.”

“It’s old stuff from various relatives. Do you like it?”

“It’s great, Jake.”

He flicked on a light in the kitchen. “I love this dining area. We can sit here and look at the woods.”

She doled out their food as he pulled her chair out. “I’ll get paper plates. I don’t have any dishes yet. My mother is going to round up stuff from my grandmother.”

“That’s the best way to start out. My things are old, too. I like it that way.”

“So we both like old stuff,” he said. “I’m also thrifty.”

“Me too! My family says I’m cheap!”

Geri’s excitement over their relationship had spread to Jake.

“I think you’re great,” he said. “We’re compatible in a lot of ways.”

They ate, sharing more details about their likes and dislikes.

“Do you want to unload your car?”

“Yes. I’ll hook up the TV, too. This place has cable.”

“There’s a game on this afternoon,” she said. “We can almost make it if we start now.”

“You’re a football fan, too? Wow, I really lucked out, didn’t I?” Putting his arm around her shoulders, they walked to the door side by side.

“I guess time will tell how lucky you are,” she said.

The back of his car was loaded with items. It took a while, but soon they had unloaded everything and his closet was neatly arranged.

“My clothes have never looked this good,” he said, admiring her arrangement skills.

“Is this the furniture from your bedroom at home?”

She looked around at the dressers and nightstands in place, and the unmade bed. At least the mattress had sheets on it.

“I was late this morning,” he said, nodding toward the bed.

“I have an awful urge to straighten it up.”

“Ha! I’ll do it. In my memory bank,Geri likes a made bed.”

Chatting, they made the bed together. “Look how nice you have everything already,” she said. “I’m really impressed. It took me a week to get my place straightened around. It’s my OCD. Everything has to be symmetrical.”

“I have awful OCD,” Jake admitted.

Standing side by side, they stared at the bed. The symbolism hit them both around the same time. If they kept dating, they might make use of that bed.

It’s not going to happen anytime soon,Geri thought.

While Jake thought,I wonder how long we have to wait.
