“Stop it. I’m glad to do it, and Billy will probably do something nice for me since I got you here.”

Kathy put her daring suit on, baring more flesh than she usually would, but she had the body for it, and when Billy arrived, he couldn’t take his eyes off her. The colonel tried to keep his distance, knowing his wife wouldn’t approve.

“Why is it that we aren’t married yet?” Billy asked, rubbing his chin.

“You haven’t asked me in a while,” Kathy answered, chuckling.

“Well, will you marry me?”

“Are you serious this time? Or is it the bathing suit you want?”

“I’ll take the suit or not.”

“Yes!” she cried, throwing her arms around him. “All from a passionate weekend.”

The colonel saw all this happening from the tractor and, unable to stand the intrigue, made his way over to see what he was missing.

“I’ll uncork a bottle of wine,” Emily said, happy for her friends’ joy, even if it was just for the moment. They flirted and played around every time they were at Emily’s house together. In her recollection, they’d never had a date away from Emily’s.

“What did I miss?” the colonel asked, and they told him.

“We’ve been playing footsies since Emily moved in here,” Billy said. “Now we’re going to get serious.”

“Until I have to give up my alimony,” she said.

“This time, it won’t be an issue,” Billy promised.

“That’s wonderful,” Rob said. “Two nice people belong together.”

Emily got the corkscrew to work and poured white wine into stemmed glasses, purchases from Home Goods.

“Finally, a reason to use these darn glasses,” she said, and they laughed.

“Someday, we’ll be toasting you,” her father said.

“That’s right,” Kathy replied. “The right guy just hasn’t come along yet. Look at me and Billy.”

“I want kids though,” Emily said. “You guys have your families.”

“You’re only twenty-five,” Rob said. “What’s your hurry?”

“I don’t have a choice,” she said. “It’s not like I’ve got men knocking down my door.”

“Just wait. It will happen when you least expect it,” Kathy said. “Billy, you won’t change your mind, will you?”

“God no. Right now I’m the happiest man alive.”

“Let’s eat,” Emily said. “Not-homemadechicken from the grocery store, with deli potatoes and a salad kit. Or my mother’s truly homemade roast beef and mashed potatoes, which I think I’ll have.”

“I’ll have beef, too,” Kathy said.

“It doesn’t get better than this,” her father said, holding up a chicken thigh. “My daughter knows exactly what I like. Now I need to do something nice for her.”

“Colonel, you cut my grass. That was way above the call of duty. But if you insist, I want a part-time summer job,” she said. “Keep your ears open.”

“I almost forgot,” Billy said, interrupting. “When you were at school this morning, the firefighters who were here last night came by to make sure we were okay, and they gave me this.”

He took a folded piece of paper out of his pocket and handed it to her.
