“So you called me your girlfriend back there.”
“I did, didn’t I.”
“I guess that means I can ask about your former girlfriends.”
“Ha! You’re going to be shocked and I’ll be embarrassed.”
“Um, why? Too many to count?”
“The opposite. There really aren’t any except for Bethany, and once we moved in together, it didn’t last long. There’s been no one else since then.”
“No way. I think you’re just saying that.”
“Emily, believe it. I’m an amateur.”
Unable to contain her laughter, Emily roared, shaking her head.
“I’m not exactly a pro,” she said. “I wasn’t just referring to sexually.”
“Oh, okay, well, you can tell my state of mind, then. I’m still back in the pool with you wearing that little bikini top.”
“I’m ready for a rerun without any drop-ins.”
“Do you want to take a dip tonight?” he asked, keeping his eyes on the road but leaning toward her and puckering up for a kiss.
“Yes! I’m getting excited.”
“You have to work tomorrow, don’t you?”
“I do. From seven to three. But it’s only eight right now. I won’t go to bed until eleven at the earliest. Stop in.”
“I don’t have a suit.”
“Go nude.”
Now it was Emily’s turn to work her eyebrows up and down playfully.
“It will be shy,” he said, looking down at his crotch.
“So will mine,” Emily said grinning. “Is this appropriate conversation for the second date? I think not.”
“If we go in the pool, you know we’ll end up doing it,” he said. “Is that what you want?”
“Yes. No. Yes, but we won’t. We won’t skinny-dip. Go by your place and get a suit.”
“See, that’s why I need you to keep us on the right path.”
“We’re in big trouble, then, Paul. Don’t leave it up to me. I wanted to jump you the first time I saw you.”
“And I wanted to jump you! How’d we get any work done that day?”
“Don’t ask me. But let’s make a pact that we’re going to keep our pants on for a month. Anything else goes.”
He looked down at her chest and eyeballed it, one side after another. “You mean?”
“Ha! Yes. You can touch them, but not till next week. Let’s say one body part a week.”
“Wait, that’s not fair. What part was this week?”
