“Yes. I have my own band of wild horses living around here. The vet was out yesterday, and he has an idea that he said he’ll talk to me about later. I have a feeling it involves the horses.”

“Wild horses are a problem here, I’ve heard.”

“Don’t tell me anything bad,” she begged. “I figured there is some intrigue involved with them. Wherever I go, drama follows.”

“It’s any living thing, I’m afraid.”

They watched the horses for a while. One lowered his head to graze when he realized they weren’t going to be shooed away, and the other followed suit.

“Okay, what are the damages?”

He read a figure that surpassed anything she could have imagined.

“I’m still in shock myself,” Randy said. “He didn’t ask for a prenup before you married him, and he didn’t fight yourrequestat the end. It’s so unusual, I don’t believe I’ve encountered this before. He must feel powerfully guilty.”

She was so glad he didn’t use the worddemand, switching it withrequest, but it had been a demand. Hell hath no fury.

“I don’t have to worry about money.”

“No, if you invest it wisely. And once your townhouse sells, and I heard from Fritz that you have several interested buyers, you’ll be debt-free.”

“Except for two thousand a year in property tax for this place.”

“It’s beautiful,” he said, looking out at the water again. “You made a good move.”

“Yes, well, time will tell. Right now it is the only thing in the world I want, the only place I could imagine going.”

“And you have a pup! What is it?”

“I’m pretty sure it’s a German shepherd mix. And she’s a girl.”

“What’s her name?”

“That’s a good question.” She picked her up to cuddle and the dog nipped her nose. “No! No biting, you little thing.”

“Brulee,” Randy said. “That’s a perfect Louisiana name for your dog.”

“Brulee! That’s perfect. Thank you, Randy.”

“To get back to business so I don’t forget, the money is in your account, transferred yesterday. You need to make a decision where to place it, because you want it to grow.”

“Yes, I know that, but thanks for the reminder. Ask Fritz to keep in contact with me unless you’re paying his fee when the house sells. I’m tired of the disrespect.”

Fritz was her Realtor.

“I’m so sorry you feel disrespected. I will handle him first thing.”

He finished off his coffee and got up to pull more papers out of the briefcase.

“I’ll send more paper later this week, but I wanted you to have this right away.”

“Randy, thank you for driving all the way out here. I appreciate it so much. One thing out of the way now. One worry resolved.”

“I’d love to stay here all day,” he said, looking around. “As a matter of fact, I’m ready to move in. But I know you like your privacy.”

She had cackled when he was talking, not even going to contest it an inch. Her lawyer was not spending the day with her, period. He had made it known early on that he was interested, not hiding it that he thought Russ was a loser and that he’d never have treated her the way her ex-husband did.

“Have a safe trip back to Jacksonville. Are you stopping in Pensacola again?”
