“You’re no fun,” she said, dragging her suitcase up the steep staircase.

The phone rang and Maggie grabbed the receiver to answer.

“Hey, Russ,” she murmured.

“How’s my girl doing?”

“I had a surprise today. When I came home, my friend from home that I’ve told you about was waiting on my porch.”

“Claudia? The blonde in all your photographs? Did she drive?”

“No, she flew, which is even weirder. I just told her yesterday I can’t see her this weekend, to come next Saturday, and she ignored that.”

“Yes, that is a little nervy. I have reservations at Capital Grill tonight.”

“She said she’ll entertain herself. I’ll take her to breakfast tomorrow.”

“Okay, well, I’ll see you at seven as usual.”

“Yikes, I’d better hustle, then.”

“You’ll be beautiful,” he said. “I missed you all day. It was really a struggle trying to stay away from your office. I might give in next time.”

She laughed, thinking it was so sweet that he couldn’t stay away from her.

“I’d better get busy,” she said. “See you soon.”

“Goodbye until then,” he said.

From the top of the stairs, Claudia called down, “Where are the gifts?”

“Come on down,” Maggie said, excited to show off the merchandise.

She laid everything out on the bed: Tiffany boxes, three to be exact, and other boxes from St. John’s Town Center.

“I’ll take this bag when you’re done with it,” Claudia said, slipping her arm through the straps of a Coach purse.

“It’s definitely my favorite.”

“Wow, so he must be smitten,” Claudia said, cocking her head to the side. “I never thought you’d snag someone rich.”

“Claudia, what does that mean?”

“Because you’re the brainiac. I thought you’d end up with a doctor or a lawyer or a scientist. Not a design person. That’s more my speed.”

“Why do you say that? I’m not a scientist.”

“Because I’m the arty one.”

“My major was in design,” Maggie said, laughing. “You’re a radiology technician. You’re more likely to end up with the doctor.”

“So I heard you tell your friend you’d be ready in an hour and a half. Where are you going?”

“He has a special night planned. It’s sort of our routine. We dress up Friday night and go somewhere fancy, and the Saturday is laid-back. Sunday we play by ear.”

“What are you wearing?”

Maggie reached into her organized closet and pulled out a pale linen strapless jumpsuit with a little jacket.
