“That’s nice,” he said, yawning. He went to the cabinet for a cup and poured coffee into it.

“Well, that’s not all. She asked if she could stay through Mardi Gras.”

Grimacing, Justin took a sip of coffee and didn’t say anything right away.

“I know it’s a long time. About six weeks until Fat Tuesday,” she said. “It means our time together will be severely reduced unless you get your apartment.”

“I’ll get one today,” he said, determined.

“That’s what I wanted to hear,” she said, laughing. “You’re such a good sport.”

“No, I’m not. I’m used to making love to my girlfriend when I want to. How can she stay so long, anyway? Don’t people work?”

“She can work remotely. Medical sales. She’ll probably have to go on trips, so I’m thinking she won’t be here around the clock, but I still don’t want to take any chances, just in case. I want my options open,” she said, grinning at him slyly.

“Okay, I’d better leave now that I have been given a mission.”

“Call me,” she said, kissing him. “Oh god, wash your face, please.”

Bursting out laughing, her scent was all over his five-o’clock shadow.

“I don’t think I will,” he replied, walking out the door. “I’ll be reminded all day.”

“You’re gross,” she said, charmed, but still embarrassed. “You’d better not kiss anyone else, or they’ll know what you were up to.”

“Love you,” he shouted. “See you tonight for dancing and barbeque.”

Waving, she stood on the porch and watched him pull away, knowing he’d make good on his word to find an apartment. He was the most reliable man she’d ever known.

“Come on, girl, let’s get this last cake ready to freeze,” she said to Brulee. “Then I’ve got to get to work.”

She picked up her phone and called Katrina, who answered on the first ring.

“Are you okay with my plan?” she asked. “I’m ready to do a room for rent if it’s too much.”

“Did you talk to Annie again?” Maggie asked.

“No, I got busy. But I’ll be so happy to see you. I’ve missed you so much.”

“Katrina, stay with me. I have a nice spare room, and it’s quiet as can be.”

“Yeah, but what about Justin? He might resent an extended visitor.”

“We already talked, and he’s going to get his own apartment.”

She told Katrina the story.

“I’m glad I can move things along for you, then,” she said, pleased. “I’ll leave early in the morning if that’s okay. And truly, I can get a room if you change your mind.”

“I want you here. I miss you! We’ll have a nice time. Annie is here every day at the rescue, too, so you’ll get to visit with her as much as you want.”

“Did she tell you she invited me to stay with her? I really didn’t think it was a good idea to intrude on the little family.”

“She’s fine with it, no worries at all,” Maggie said. “Plus, I can drink, so you’ll have more fun here.”

“Ha! You’re right.” She wanted to continue the conversation about Annie. “Confidentially, the last time I saw them, her husband got a little too friendly.”

“Ugh. Steve. He never used to be that way. Maybe he was just teasing,” Maggie said, trying to change the subject. “By the way, we’re having a party Sunday night!”
