“You can watch TV after we get a divorce, okay?”

“What are you talking about now?”

She had to hand it to him, her words struck a nerve, and he flushed and stammered. The guy was as transparent as could be.

“Steve, stop lying. I saw you with that young girl tonight. I saw your truck, I saw you kissing her, and saw her getting into her father’s car. Don’t lie, please, it’s so demeaning. If you want to be with someone else, go for it, but have enough respect for me to tell me so I can leave.”

Processing everything she said, Steve’s mind was a jumble of thoughts. “Where would you go?”

“I’ll move in with Maggie.”

“Why were you by the school?”

“I was looking at a house with Katrina on Main Street. And there was your truck and you kissing the girl in the playground like a couple of kids. How old is she anyway?”

“She’s a student teacher there,” he said. “Not a student.”

“Thank God, Steve, because I could see the headlines. Does she know you’re married?”

“No.”

“Well, you’d better tell her right away because I’m going to confront her father as soon as I get his contact information.”

“Please don’t do that. I’ll tell her tonight.” He stood up and started to pace. “What do we do now?”

“What do you want to do? If you love her, you’ll want to get a divorce, right?”

“What about the baby?”

“What about him? He won’t be the first kid who grew up without a father.”

“I’d never abandoned my son.”

“You say that now, but you’re abandoning me. I thought you loved me, Steve.”

“We just met five months ago, Annie. I don’t even know you.”

“Why wouldn’t you keep trying to know me? Instead, you get involved with someone else. That doesn’t make any sense. You have a lot to lose, Steve. Besides your marriage, you’ll be paying child support for the rest of your life.”

“I’ll support my kid,” he snapped.

“Your next wife might not appreciate that,” Annie replied. “You’re not giving us a chance, Steve. Remember how we felt the first time we saw each other? We should nurture our relationship. It could be so wonderful if you would just give us a chance.”

“I don’t want to make the effort,” he said, not hesitating. “I’m not interested anymore.”

Looking right at her defiantly, he wasn’t feeling any remorse, yet. Like she’d been hit in the face with a ball, his words penetrated her heart.

“Your relationship with that young girl will run its course if you don’t feed it, Steve. The same thing will happen that happened to us.”

“I won’t let it,” he replied.

“Wow, that says a lot. You really don’t care about me.”

“It’s not that, Annie. I do care about you. But there’s nothing there.”

“You mean the lust,” she said. Then she smoothed her hands across her belly. “I guess this is the turnoff.”

“It’s not what I expected,” he said, looking away.
