Standing in the front window, he watched for her car, not knowing what she drove. Soon, a small sedan pulled up front, and he watched her get out before he ran to the door.

“Hey,” he said, smiling.

Then he noticed she had a small bag with her, which she held up.

“I assume I’m spending the night,” she replied, grinning, the smile going right to his groin.

“You can spend the night. I even changed the sheets.”

“Oh, man, am I that transparent?”

“Not at all. I just wasn’t willing to take any chances.”

He laughed out loud, wondering what he’d done to deserve such good fortune; she was not only smart and beautiful, she was willing, too.

Standing aside so she could get through, he paused to kiss her. They’d spent several hours kissing in the playground, but nothing beyond that. He was ready to feel her up at the very least.

“Did you eat? I ordered food.” He took her bag and put it on a chair before wrapping his arms around her and kissing her again, this time a long, slow open-mouth kiss where he could feel her body pressed against his.

“Wow, a real kiss and hug away from my father’s prying eyes.”

“I need to slow down,” he said, grinning.

“It has been a month of teasing, hasn’t it? I go home from school with wet underpants every night.”

No girl had ever talked to him like that before, making him giggle like a girl.

“And what does that mean?” he asked, grinning again.

“It means you turned me on,” she said, getting right to the point. “When we’re together, I’m hot the whole time. Finally, we’re gonna see where this thing is going.”

“Are you sure about that?”

“I’m sure. We’ve been horsing around for a month. I’ve never waited this long before.”

“Me either,” he said. “I guess that’s obvious.”

“Why’d you marry her?” Lisa asked, really needing to know. “There must have been something.”

“It seemed like the right thing to do at the time.”

He almost slipped and saidif I hadn’t met you…but luckily remembered that he’d told her he was separated when they’d met for the first time.

Watching him, Lisa wondered if Steve was all there. He seemed immature for a guy his age, but maybe she was expecting too much. He’d been in Cypress Cove all his life. The isolation might stunt a man’s growth.

A knock on the door signaled the food had arrived. Lisa wasn’t really hungry, but she’d eat just so they could sit and talk a while longer. Eventually, she had to get into the shower and to bed because six in the morning came around soon enough. Plus, and that was with a capital P, she was hoping to have sex with Steve because she needed it and he was cute and available. There was no one else in town.

“I got salad in case you were one of those women who don’t admit to eating pizza. My wife was like that; she denied she ever ate anything with a carb in it, and then once she was relaxed in front of me, she’d get her own pizza and chow down like it was the last supper.”

“I’m definitely a pizza eater,” Lisa said, not acknowledging the crack about the wife.

He gave her a plate and she took two big slices.

“What are your plans?” Lisa asked, pouring Diet Coke into a glass of ice Steve had given her.

“Right now?” he asked, and she nodded. “I’m going to get a divorce and move into an apartment above my father’s hardware store. I’d like you to move in with me.”

“Really? Because if I get hired by Cypress Middle School, it means I’m staying in town. I’ll share an apartment with you if it comes to that. I love my folks, don’t get me wrong, but they are a little overbearing.”
