“Roll the dice, Maggie. It’s your turn,” Justin said, laughing at her. “The girl’s ahead, and she don’t want to play no more.”

“Patience, buddy, jeez,” she said, gathering the dice while Annie was doubled over laughing so hard.

“We didn’t play Farkle this way back in Pensacola,” Annie said, snorting. “I think your boyfriend cheats.”

“I know he does!” Maggie cried. “Look at this mess.”

Annie’s phone rang for the fourth time. “Is it Steve again?” Justin asked.

“Probably. What you got there, Maggie?” Annie asked, pointing to her hand.

“You need to give the guy a break before he calls the police and reports you missing.”

“Didn’t you leave him a note?” Maggie asked, spreading her cards out to prove she won again.

“You cheated this time, you wench,” Justin cried, throwing his cards down. “I’m never playing with you two again.”

Maggie laughed hysterically, tears rolling down her cheeks.

“I didn’t leave him a note,” Annie said haughtily, looking at her phone. “He can go straight to hell.”

“Answer it, Annie,” Maggie demanded. “Justin’s right. He’ll be calling the police next.”

“Grrrr. You two!”

She hit the answer button. “What do you want?”

“Annie, thank god. Where are you? I came home and you were gone.”

“You mean you invited your girlfriend. Remember, we have the camera doorbell, Steve. I saw her with her bag. What happened? Did she get cold feet?”

“She looked at our wedding album. And so did I! Come home, Annie.”

“I can’t,” she said. “Remember? No car.”

“I’ll come get you. Where are you?”

“I don’t want you to. I’m not living with a guy who doesn’t love me.”

Justin and Maggie had moved to the living room, and she didn’t even realize it, so wrapped up in the moment in her marriage.

“Annie, you know what I remembered tonight? When I was lookin’ at our wedding pictures? I remembered our vows. I remember what you said to me. ‘I promise to love you forever, to support you through life, to be there for you during the good times and the difficult times. You’re the love of my life.’ Do you remember what I said to you?”

“I do, like it was just yesterday and not five freakin’ months ago. You said that love is a decision and that you would decide to choose love, no matter what. I guess you blew that big time.”

“Annie, I decide to love you right now. I’m sorry! I had a lapse of judgment. I didn’t have sex with her, I swear to you. We were going to tonight, but she found the album, and when I got out of the shower, she was gone.”

“Ha! The wedding pictures save the marriage, is that what you’re saying?”

“I guess so. Will you give me another chance? I’ll try to be a better husband and not so damn selfish. I reminded myself of my dad tonight, and I hated it.”

“You’re nothing like that pig, trust me.”

“What do you say? Will you come home tonight?”

“I guess so. I’m at Bayou Cottage.”
