When she pushed the door open, four large dogs of different breeds crowded around the door, whining with relief that they hadn’t been abandoned.

“Oh, I should have warned you. I love dogs. I only have four right now, but my daughter runs a rescue, and I’m sure I’m going to be fostering for her soon.”

“I love dogs,” he said. “My last just died a few months before Christmas. I wasn’t sure if I’d have the courage to have another one.”

“Try fostering. Then there’s a light at the end of the tunnel.”

She took her hat off and fluffed up her hair. “Have a seat. I need to get out of this dress.”

He nodded and pulled out a chair at the kitchen table. Looking around the space, it was a new house, modern and spacious, obviously worth a lot of money. He remembered that her soon-to-be ex-husband owned the hardware store in town and had just left Beverly for his mistress of one year, a young woman from town whose husband was a fisherman.

Beverly came out in jeans and a white shirt. “I’ll get us some coffee unless it’s too late for you. I can give you any beverage. We’re ready for anything here.”

“I’d kill for a giant Coke,” he said.

“Coming right up. That sounds good. You know I’m an alcoholic. We covered that on the dance floor. I just started going to AA this week, and I go daily, every morning. It’s right across the street, so it doesn’t take much effort. I know I’m lucky.”

“I think you’re amazing,” he said, taking a frosty glass from her. “I don’t drink, but I have trouble giving up sugar for Lent.”

“It would be different if sugar had almost ruined your life. I have my son to thank. He confronted me in the nick of time. No one ever had the courage to do that before.

“I’m actually a little hungry. Can I make you a sandwich?”

“A sandwich would be great,” he said, relaxed.

While she prepared the food, she asked him about his wife.

“She was a sweet lady,” he said. “We were high school sweethearts. She worked in the school cafeteria, so her hours were about the same as our daughter’s. Her life revolved around Lisa. Now of course, I discovered too late that she was suffocating Lisa, and that was why she never wanted to come home from school on breaks.

“When Connie died, she moved home right away to student teach at my school. I felt sad because I know Connie would have loved her being home, not realizing she was the reason she stayed away.”

“We do the best we can for our kids,” Beverly said. “Someday, Lisa will have a family, and then she’ll find out how wonderful her mother’s love was.”

The words struck Randy in the heart, and he burst into tears. “I’m so sorry. Oh my god, how awful. I’m so embarrassed.”

She handed him a paper towel and put her hand on his back, rubbing it in a small circular movement until he calmed down. Reaching down for his hand, she gently pulled him out of the chair.

“Come with me,” she said in a soft voice.

He followed her down a dark hallway into a huge room with a dim light on a nightstand. Reaching up, she smoothed his hair back with her hands and stood on her toes to reach his lips. Neither had kissed anyone in a long time, years probably, and it felt new and a little foreign. Finally, he threaded his arms around her body, the kisses became a little more fervent, and she leaned into it, her body responding. She had wondered if it was capable of sexual feeling again.

She reached down for his crotch and he moaned. What she felt was substantial, a semi-firm bulk that she longed to feel inside her.

“Can I shower?” he whispered.

“We’ll do it together,” she said. “It’s been a while since anyone saw me naked, so don’t expect too much. I’m fifty-something, you know.”

“Me too,” he said. “Pushing sixty.”

He undressed and she smiled. He had a nice, mature man’s body, with a hairy chest that he didn’t try to shave, and nice thighs, and lying it front, his parts were sort of leaning to the side, but they were nice and certainly big enough for her.

Then he watched her undress, and it was thrilling for him. There was nothing aged about her body in his eyes.

“This is it,” she said after she’d removed everything, smiling and naked, holding her arms off at her sides.

“You’re lovely,” he said, going to her to caress. “Woman.”

“Ha! Yep, I’m a woman.”
