“I’m dying to tell you, but I promised!”

“Don’t tell. You’ll regret it.”

“I won’t, thank you. I have to go inside for a minute.”

Justin trailed after her. “Can I guess?”

“Ha! I might as well just tell you, then!”

“Let me guess, and then you won’t feel guilty.”

At the cottage door, Maggie tore her work gloves off and threw them in a basket kept there for that purpose. She spun around, spots of color high on her cheeks. “You won’t believe it.”

“What!”

“Katrina’s pregnant with Dave’s baby.”

Stunned, Justin looked over her head, staring at a spot on the wall with such intensity that she turned around to see what he was looking at, laughing out loud.

“No way.”

“Yes! They were seeing each other a little longer than they let on, I’m afraid. She was worried that I’d be upset because of the deception in my past, but the truth is she only betrayed Alphé for a day, and I think he was probably way ahead of her. And of course,Amber.”

“Yes, god forbid anyone do Amber wrong.”

She gave him a gentle smack, laughing. “We’ll have babies close together. You’ll be an uncle, and I’ll be an aunt! Our kids will be cousins. And then there’s Annie’s baby.”

“The three musketeers.”

“Right! Kat still has to tell Annie though.”

Early that morning, Annie got up after a restless night. “Can you please stop moving around?” Steve begged. “Every time you changed position, it was like you were jumping on the bed, and it woke me up.”

“I’m sorry. I’ll go sleep in the recliner for a while. Maybe we can both get another hour.”

He rolled over with the pillow on his head. With her due date still months away, he didn’t know how he would survive on a couple of hours of sleep a night.

“Wait, Annie. I’ll sleep out there so you can have the bed.”

“No, thank you, honey, but that’s okay. I can’t stay in the bed. My back is killing me. We need a new mattress.”

“Ask Maggie for one for your baby gift.”

She turned around, but he had the pillow over his head. “No. You ask one of your worthless friends who do nothing for us but drink our beer every weekend.”

In the living room, she got into the recliner and closed her eyes. Her feelings were so hurt. Steve had been out at Bayou Cottage on Saturday and came back with tales. Katrina had been there with Dave Chastain. Kat had never said a word to Annie about breaking up with Alphé. Rather than confront them, she waited it out. So that afternoon when she got a text from Maggie, it took her by surprise.

Can you meet Kat and me at the café tomorrow morning at nine? I’ll bring you into the rescue afterward. Kat has to travel this week.

She thought about it for a moment.Of course. See you at nine.

Monday morning, she got ready to go to the rescue a little earlier than normal and walked across the street. Katrina met her in the middle of the street, hugging her. Then they heard a boat motor and watched Maggie pull up to the dock. They met her halfway, the three of them hugging. Annie decided not to wait.

“Katrina, Steve told me you were with Dave yesterday. I’m so hurt.”

Katrina backed up a little, frowning and embarrassed. “Was it that obvious?”

“It must have been because Steve is a dunce when it comes to that stuff.”
