“Calista?”

“That’d be me,” she said, arms outstretched. “Surprise!”

He walked toward her, staring at her body, pointing. “I don’t understand.”

Hedid, he got the part that she was pregnant, but why didn’t she tell him? But then he truly didn’t, upset and confused; was she going to have Alphé’s baby?

“You’re a piece of work, Austin. I’m pregnant withyourbabies. Twins. A boy and a girl.”

Shaking, he dropped to his knees, wrapping his arms around her as far as he was able with the big appendage in front, and sobbed into her belly. She looked down at his head, at that hair, pulling on his ponytail a little bit, allowing him to have a moment.

“Come on in the house before the neighbors call the cops,” she finally said, helping him stand up.

Getting to his feet, he held her, reaching down to touch her belly again, but this time she grabbed his hand before he could.

“Let’s get inside.”

She led him to the side door, picking up the basket of vegetables first.

“The table is covered, and there are probably tomato bugs and spiders in there, too,” she said.

“I don’t care. I have to hear what’s happened. What did I miss? Where was I when this was taking place?”

“You were in Alaska. It was for the best, Austin. It gave me a chance to settle down. Come in, and we’ll drink coffee together, and I’ll tell you everything, even the gore. You might not want to hear it all, but I think it’s important you do.”

“I think so, too,” he said, unable to take his eyes off her. “You’re sure they aren’t Alphé’s? I’m sorry if that’s insulting, but I don’t want any surprises.”

“Alphé had a vasectomy a long time ago,” she said. “I’m sure they’re not his.”

He took the basket from her and set it on a chair.

She poured coffee and made hers iced. “Do you want hot or iced?”

“Hot is okay. I’m not sick of the heat yet.”

“It’s been the worst this year.”

He watched her walking around the kitchen, preparing the coffee. She was huge through the belly, her face had filled out, and he got a hint of the rest of her body through the thin cotton fabric of her sundress. Desire surged through him. This was his woman, his babies.

“What?” she asked when he kept staring at her.

“Nothing, sorry. You look wonderful. How do you feel?”

“Like a whale. The heat bothered me bad this summer.”

“I bet. Where are the kids?”

“Alphé and his girlfriend, Emily from the café, have them out on the water.”

“Emily? How’d that come about?”

“They are a match. She doesn’t expect anything from him but a roof over her head.”

“What happened between you two? I’m glad you’re not together, but you seemed like the perfect couple.”

He took the coffee from her, her story giving him the first hope he’d had in a long while.

“We were perfectly awful together. Nothing ever happened.”
