It was the first time Alphé had mentioned marriage. Katrina had no intention of marrying Alphé, or any other man. She’d try to stay in the here and now with Alphé and it seemed even more important that she do so if he was talking marriage.

“Alright. In the meantime, when are you going to start working on my house?” She burst out laughing, teasing him. Alphé didn’t have a spar minute in his day.

“I did tell you I’d do some of the work, didn’t I.”

“You did. But Luke Esprit and his workmen have been there daily. I’ll be able to move in soon, and then you’ll have me close by. How does that make you feel?”

“I like it a lot,” he said. “Will you stay with me tonight?”

“Oh, Alphé, I don’t think so. Not with the kids right here.”

“We slept together on the boat, and they were fine with it.”

“But that was like an adventure,” she replied. “This is real life. Your house where you conceived babies with another woman. It feels wrong.”

“I don’t want to badger you if you feel strongly about it.”

“I’m sorry, but I do. As soon as my cottage is ready, I’m going to make it our love nest. When Lola is here with the kids, you can stay with me for a few hours, and I’ll ravish you.”

He squirmed a little in his chair, pulling on the crotch of his jeans. They’d only had sex a few times, and it was usually under circumstances that allowed little foreplay. Alphé was exhausted all the time, and it showed in the amount of attention he gave her.

“You don’t know how badly I want to take care of that for you,” she whispered, moving her chair closer to his.

With her hand on his knee, she ran it up his leg, stopping rightthere. Gently kneading him, he closed his eyes and let her do what she wanted. The door to the house was closed, so if any child came out, they’d have time to pull away.

“This is worse than being a teenager,” he said. “Worried my parents are going to come out here and catch us. You should spend the night. I didn’t realize how horny I am.”

She sat back in the chair, his words effectively making any passion she felt for Alphé disappear. Afraid of the truth, it boiled down to not wanting to play house. And it went deeper than that, exposing chinks in their relationship. She didn’t see a future with him.

“Maybe this once I’ll do it because I knowyou’re horny. But it will not happen again. It’s not fair to the kids.”

She could get up and leave after having sex, but that felt wrong, too, like if the kids were awake, they’d know she’d just come over for that. No. It was better to let them see her in the morning, having breakfast with them before they went to church.

“Thank you so much,” he said, happy he got his way. “I’m like the begging boyfriend you want to kill.”

Biting her tongue to keep from saying goodbye to him permanently, she didn’t want to do anything hasty for the children’s sake.

“Not really.”

Then, as they knew might happen, the door opened and Pris came out.

“Oh, you’re still here!” she said excitedly, cuddling up to Katrina.

“I’m going to spend the night if you’re okay with that.”

“Yes! I love it.”

“If it’s okay with Daddy here, do you want to come back to my room with me so I can get my pj’s and my bag?”

“Yes! Dad, okay?” Pris asked.

“Oh, I guess so. No one is that excited about me sleeping over.”

They laughed out loud. “Everyone’s happy,” Katrina said.

“What’s going on out here?” It was Angela.

“Kat’s spending the night!” Pris informed her.
