Two days out of town for her job and Thursday morning Katrina was ready to get back to her life in Cypress Cove. She had to get Maggie to a doctor’s appointment, so as soon as she landed, she sent her a text message.I’ll be home in forty minutes. Meet me at the café.

Maggie was there, smiling when Katrina pulled up. A relieved Katrina thought that meant she’d come to terms with everything and had told Justin, or was going to tell him. Maggie looked in the car window.

“Do you need to go inside?” Maggie asked.

“No, I’m good. Let’s head back to Saint John’s Parish.”

“I feel bad that you were just there.”

“Maggie, get in,” Katrina said, laughing.

“Okay, if you’re sure. I just realized I could have taken the train.”

“You’d take an hour-long train ride when I can get you there in a quarter of the time. No. Plus, I want to be there when you get the news.”

“Jeez, don’t remind me.”

“Did you say anything to Justin yet?”

“No, there really wasn’t the opportunity even if I wanted to. He had an emergency Tuesday night, and last night we were both cross-eyed. Maybe this weekend, but I doubt it. I don’t feel like sharing it with him yet.”

“Maggie—”

“No, Kat. I’m not feeling it yet. There’s still something we have to work out. I can’t put my finger on it. It’s not that he’s still trying to control me exactly. He has an attitude.”

“I hope you’re imagining it.”

“I’m not. Let’s not talk about it. Right now, I need to be a better friend to you and Annie. I know I’ve been so self-centered.”

“You’re imagining it. You’ve been there for both of us every step of the way. Now it’s your turn.”

“I need to tell Annie, but she tells Steve everything, and I don’t want him to know before Justin.”

“See? There’s the major reason you need to tell him. Respect.”

“Yeah, yeah. Just drive.”

“Do you want me to come in with you?” Katrina asked when they arrived.

“Nah. You relax. Thank you so much. I hope this won’t take long.”

She got out of the car, ducking down to wave again through the window. Katrina got out her laptop to work while she waited. Forty-five minutes later, a red-eyed Maggie returned.

“Oh, not good?” Katrina asked, closing her laptop.

“I won’t return to her. I’m ten weeks. Due date September 15.”

“So that means you got pregnant right before Christmas. Was she a bitch? Do you want to talk about it?”

“There’s nothing to tell. She asked me if I drank, and I was honest. That was the wrong thing to do. I won’t make the same mistake with the next doctor. I wonder how Annie can stand her.”

“Maggie, you were recovering from a boating accident. You didn’t drink for weeks. At your Twelfth Night party, you had a glass of champagne. You’ve been abstaining since Lent started. I think you’re making it worse than it really is.”

Maggie had tears rolling down her cheeks, listening to Katrina. “We drank a bottle of wine the night before Ash Wednesday.”

“Who? You and your borderline alcoholic boyfriend?”

Maggie laughed out loud, wiping her eyes with a tissue Katrina had given her.
