“Maggie, I’m so sorry.”

“It’s okay, Justin. It’s going to take me a while. I didn’t want to tell you. Katrina said it was disrespectful not to. So I’m telling you. This is not what I expected, either way. Expectations have a way of messing up everything.”

“What did you expect?”

“I don’t know, really. I guess I expected we would do everything together, that we’d be in the same camp.”

“Sweetheart, I’m in yours. I had a moment of stupidity.”

“It coincided with my moment of fertility, however.”

“What did you want to do that we didn’t do?”

“I thought we’d plan it together. I’m not sure how it happened. At Christmas, I pissed you off about the tree I had decorated on the dock, and then we did it and you cooled right off. I might have forgotten to put my diaphragm in, or it might have slipped. I don’t know.

“I felt so unsure of myself, I was afraid to ask you to do the test with me. It probably sounds stupid to you, but I didn’t want to have to deal with your negativity. Or sarcasm. I just wanted to feel it. I wanted you to be like Raven and just nuzzle me.”

Justin cried again. “I’ll nuzzle you, Maggie. I’m so sorry.”

He reached for her.

“Did you save the test?”

“I did. It’s in my purse.”

“Why your purse?” he asked frowning.

“Because Kat made me do the test in Walmart.”

That was all it took to defuse the emotion. Bursting into laughter, Justin tried to see Maggie in the department store bathroom, doing the test.

“It was pretty funny, now that I think of it. But not so much when I did it.”

“I’m so sorry. From here on out, I’m there for you, Maggie. We’re gonna have a baby. Do you have any rules for me?”

She looked at him carefully to see if he was being sarcastic. Then there was a knock on the door, and Brulee barked.

“A little delayed there, girlfriend,” Maggie said, frowning at her.

“She was watching us.” Justin went to the door and opened it. “Bubba.”

Justin and Maggie made eye contact, winking at each other and it was all they could do to stay appropriate

“Justin, I come to offer my apologies to your lady again.”

Justin looked over at Maggie, who had a grim smirk on her face. “Let him in.”

She stood in her high heels and red dress, looking like a movie star.

“Oh, wow. You’re all fancy. I’m interrupting your evening.”

“It’s okay, Bubba,” she said. “Apology accepted.”

Then he looked at the cake, and Maggie watched the recognition pass over his face. “Oh shit.”

“Ha! Yeah, that’s what I said. The horse knew what I didn’t know. Dumb me.”

“Oh, no, miss. I’m so sorry.” Bubba reeled, shaking his hands in the air. “I feel like such an ass. Gloria won’t speak to me until I do this, come and offer my deepest apologies.”
