“Wait! Does that mean…”

“Yes, it means we’ll be alone all weekend.”

Calista got the text from Alphé and almost cried; she was so relieved. She hated any kind of dissension, especially with people who were integral to her life. Since Lola had moved out, Calista’s life revolved around Alphé’s kids. She loved them, but Austin was right; Alphé needed to pay her. So one battle won.

Right at six thirty his SUV pulled into the driveway. She waved to him from the doorway, so happy to see him, momentarily forgetting about his threats the night before.

“You ready to shop?”

“I am! This is a real treat.”

“We’ll eat at a diner, too. I feel like a real family man.”

She met him at the door, shocked at his comment. This guy might be too good to be true. “Wow.”

“Where are your spawn?”

“Katrina is watching them so we can have an actual date.”

“Oh-oh, does that include sex in the back of the car?”

“Is that what the in crowd does?” she asked giggling.

“Ha! Remember, I was the underdog.”

“I’m ready to go when you are.”

“Okay, great, I’ll just go to the men’s room, and we can take off.”

He came out and she remembered to tell him about Alphé’s four kids.

“Alphé’s kids want to go this weekend, too. I still can’t believe it.”

“They probably want an adventure,” he said. “It’ll be fun with all the kids.”

“You are a glutton for punishment.”

“Not really. I’m just ready to stop with the selfish single life. I’m ready to give a little bit.”

They got in the car and headed to the latest hot spot in Saint John’s Parish, Walmart.

Early Friday, Katrina slid out of Alphé’s bed. He grabbed her wrist. “Don’t go.”

“I have to. You need to get up and leave yourself. Lola will be here at six. The movers are coming at eight, and I have to make sure the new house is clean before they put my stuff around.”

“I’m thinking about not fishing today. Lettin’ Pierre go out alone.”

“Why? You’ve never taken a day off before.”

“I need to be here to help you with the movers.”

“No, you don’t, Alphé. Go fishing. I’ll get Maggie or Annie to come over. It’ll be fine.”

He snaked his arms across the bed, enveloping her with his embrace. “I’ll stay close to shore today so you can contact me.”

“I’ll call you over the radio if I have to. You go do your thing.”

She bent over to kiss him again. “Thanks, Alphé. I hope things work out for us in the long run.”
