“Right.”

He went into the bathroom, and she got up. “I guess we’re up, Brulee,” she muttered. “Let’s go downstairs.”

She pulled sweatpants and a T-shirt on and followed the dog down the staircase. The cottage in the morning always made her happy, the light coming from the rear windows, the floor cold, out the front the fog lifting, leaving dew behind.

On some mornings like today there were horses in the yard when she let Brulee out. Today, Raven hadn’t come out yet. Maggie imagined her in the woods, possibly lying down among the trees.

Back inside the cottage, she got coffee going. Taking slices of bread out of the packaging, she’d make Justin toast. The assistant at the clinic, a young college girl who was a little too cute, almost always brought food in for him, and Maggie was going to make sure that this morning she satisfied him in every way before he went to work.

Five minutes later, he came down the stairs. “I smell andouille.”

He leaned over to kiss her.

“Sausage, eggs and toast. And don’t forget coffee.” She handed him a cup. Things between them had leveled off. They would get a breather.

“I’m glad you’re my boyfriend,” she said, placing a plate of food in front of him. “I know I don’t always act like it.”

“You’re fine, Maggie.”

“I’m afraid if I wait on you too much, you’ll take me for granted. It’s a fine line between serving you and becoming your servant.”

“You don’t need to wait on me.”

He watched her move around the kitchen. After last night, he was pretty sure he knew her body completely. But the pregnancy had added a new twist he was just becoming familiar with.

“I don’t want any other woman to do it.”

“Ain’t happening. I don’t even make eye contact with other women. They’re just people, okay? You’re who I want.”

“I feel like the old horrors of my former marriage are encroaching upon this relationship.”

“It’s inevitable. We comprise our experiences. I read that somewhere.”

“I want to move on, though. You’re not Russ. I hate it I’m punishing you for things he did to me.”

“Maggie, come here.”

Justin pulled her down on his lap. Encircling her with his arms, he felt her relaxing. “I can see when that happens. I’m a big boy. I can deal with it.”

“There has to be a way I can remind myself that I’m doing it. I’ll work on it. Eat your breakfast before it gets cold.”

“I only want one thing now,” he said, moving under her with his hands on her hips.

“I can arrange that.”

Slipping her pants off, she wiggled around a little, giggling, and it excited him; he turned her around, kissing her like he had the night before. Before she knew it, she felt his erection, right there, so she straddled him, and it didn’t take long. They sat together, attached like that, for a while.

“I guess I need to let you get to work,” she said, sliding off him.

“Now I don’t want to leave,” he said, rising to go clean up.

Sending him off to work satiated in every way was the goal, and she laughed.

“Ha! I know. I needed to find some inspiration.”

“It was perfect.”

When she felt aimless like this, with all her client work done, she often got in her boat for a ride around the cove. Today she’d do it on horseback. Itching for Justin to leave led to her feeling guilty. It was always something. Then her phone beeped.
