“Hey, is this too late?”

“No,” Katrina whispered. “We’re watchingFrozenagain. I’m ready to drown myself.”

“Ha! Don’t do that. Can you come for lunch tomorrow? My mother and aunt are coming. I’ll ask Annie, too.”

“Can I bring Alphé’s sister-in-law? We have a lunch date tomorrow. I’d rather eat at the cottage.”

“Sure. The more the merrier.”

“Can I bring anything?”

“I’m not doing alcohol for Lent. If you want to drink, bring vino.”

“I’ve already forgotten what I gave up. I can go without wine for one lady’s luncheon.”

“Yeah, well, I’m not sure my mother can, or my aunt.”

“They’re big girls,” Katrina said. “If you don’t serve wine, you don’t serve it, period, end of discussion.”

“Ha! I may have to quote you. I’ll see you around noon, then.”

Looking up at the ceiling, she could hear the shower running, so she keyed in Annie’s number.

“Are you busy?”

“No, lying in bed, reading. Steve’s watching TV.”

“Come for lunch tomorrow at noon. Kat’s coming, and my mom and aunt will be here.”

“Any special occasion?”

“Nope. Evidently, I said they should drop by for lunch and then promptly forgot I said it. Justin came home with a pie from my mom ‘for lunch.’”

“Oh, that’s funny. How fun! Yes, thank you. I’ll see you at noon.”

The squeak of the shower signaled Justin finished. She ran up the stairs and entered the bedroom just as he came out of the bathroom, naked.

“Ah! Just in time.”

Grinning at her, he reached behind the door and grabbed a towel. “I’m shy.”

“Since when?” She plopped on the bed. “We made it through another night wine-free.”

“It feels good, doesn’t it? I’m sleeping better at night, too.”

“Are you? You still snore just as loud.”

She watched him getting his sweatpants on, then standing in front of her vanity, combing his hair, the muscles in his back flexing with each movement of his arms.

“How’d I luck out?”

He looked at her in the mirror, watching him. “You mean how’d I luck out. You made my dream come true.”

He walked over to her and pushed her over on the bed so he could get next to her to hold.

“And what is that?”

“That you’d live with me,” he said. “Or that you’d let me live with you. Now if I could just talk you into getting married, life would be perfect.”
