They tied the skiff to the mooring. Justin had climbed out of the trench and walked toward the dock when he heard the boat. He was a big, muscular, hot hunk. There were no other words.

“Oh, Jesus,” Katrina muttered. “I should look away.”

Maggie snickered. “I know. It’s why no matter how ticked off I get, I have to make it work. That body wants me. My new name for myself is Fat-Ass Maggie. He wants Maggie’s fat ass.”

Katrina pulled Maggie’s arm so she could see behind her. “Baby got back.”

“And boobs. Look at these things. What’s it gonna be like in seven more months?”

“You’ll be great. I can hardly wait to get some of that for this body.”

“Kat, you’re lanky, like a snake. A snake with boobs.”

They laughed out loud and high-fived, and then they looked up to see Justin.

“That guy still takes my breath away,” Maggie said.

“Hey, handsome,” Katrina called out. “Papa.”

“That’s me,” Justin said, strutting down the dock.

Slinging an arm around Maggie, he backed away from Katrina. “I’m sweaty as a pig, or I’d hug.”

“I came to see the barn.”

“We’re digging footings right now. Steve will come later to pour the cement. We should have rented a backhoe, but no one was smart enough to figure that out.”

“Kat wants to see Raven.”

“Ah! You should take Annie along,” Justin said. “Raven won’t know what’s up with all of you pregnant humans together.”

“Soon to be one more,” Katrina said, framing her flat belly with her hands.

“No way!”

“Well, not yet. But I’m working on it.”

They got into a huddle and jumped up and down, laughing.

“Let’s go get Annie,” Maggie said. “Tell Justin about Calista’s boyfriend.”

“Formerboyfriend, you mean.”

While they walked over to the rescue, Katrina told Justin what had happened.

“I told Maggie from the beginning I didn’t like that guy. He was sneaking around the property like he was trying to catch us doing something wrong. And in high school, he was a creep.”

“I hope Calista can get away from him without too much trouble. He has trouble written across his forehead.”

By Sunday late afternoon, Calista was annoyed. Alphé wasn’t answering her text messages, and no one answered the house phone. She was sure Alphé must be furious with her. She sent Katrina a text message, who said Alphé was at his mother’s house.

“Mom, let’s walk over to Alphé’s,” Porter said, getting bored and wanting to see his cousins.

“Katrina said they’re at Maw Maw Mae’s house,” Calista said. “We can give them some space. You’ll see the children at school tomorrow, and then we’ll all be together afterward.”

Austin had already texted or called over ten times in the few hours they’d been apart, giving her a blow-by-blow description of his afternoon. If she didn’t respond right away, he’d text her back with hurt feelings and begging for a clarification of what he’d done to upset her.

She finally answered the phone. “Austin, please stop. I’m trying to get my children ready for school tomorrow. We just spent the weekend together. Relax and enjoy the time you have until you have to get on a plane.”
