Ugh. So it was going to be a business call. Oh well. And the comment about being Beaumont’s friend…

“Gotcha so far.”

“Ha! Bear with me, please. Evidently, Calista, the sister-in-law, broke up with Austin Macon last night. Now she’s afraid he’ll harm her.”

“Did he threaten her?”

“Not directly. However, he threatened to make the accusation against Alphé.”

“Okay. If he tries to contact her or poses any threat to her, tell her to call 9-1-1. If she has someone she can stay with, that would be great.”

“Wait, this is what you’re offering her?”

“What would you like me to do? We don’t have enough manpower to babysit every woman whose boyfriend acts like a douchebag.”

Sputtering, Katrina wondered if he said that because he had met her socially, or if he was just that inappropriate with everyone, so she asked him.

“Look, I’m sorry. But try to see things my way for a minute. I’ve got a guy who thinks he outranks me trying to reopen an accidental death case because he’s jealous.”

“Okay, well, whatever. I’m going to hang up now. Sorry for bothering you.”

“You didn’t bother me at all. I’ll probably see you around.”

There was just a tone to his voice that went straight to her heart.

“I doubt it,” she said, and then burst out laughing. “Maybe.”

And she hung up, listening to him chuckle.

Watching Dave at Maggie’s on Sunday intrigued her because he and Justin didn’t look anything alike. Justin was big, but Dave was huge, six five, a few inches taller than his brother. He didn’t have tatts, where Justin had them all over his body, some of them disappearing below his waistband, which left more to the imagination. Thick, dark unruly hair that curled if he didn’t keep it short enough covered Dave’s head, and there was always a lock of it over his forehead.

With impossibly broad shoulders, an even flatter stomach, and thighs that made her weak in the knees, he walked like she would expect a sheriff to walk, with a commanding presence, and when he had been unloading fifty-pound bags of concrete out of Steve Casson’s truck, she tried not to stare at him; he didn’t even falter picking them up to place on his shoulder.

Maggie elbowed her. “You’re staring at Dave.”

“Oh my God. How can I not?”

“You said that about Alphé,” she replied, laughing. “And this guy has a crazy-ass girlfriend.”

“I thought you liked Amber.”

“I trusted her with my dog, but that doesn’t mean she wouldn’t kill you if you made a play for her boyfriend.”

“I’m just looking. I like Alphé. I’m trying to get pregnant by Alphé.”

“But you could be with my future brother-in-law,” Maggie whispered. “We’d be related.”

“You’re making me nervous.”

“Kat, are you really committed to Alphé?”

“Alphé’s available, and he expects nothing. He’s up at five, unconscious by nine. We’ve had sex about five times since we’ve been together, and half of those times were quickies before he conked out. He’s gone fourteen hours a day and has four kids he’s devoted to. The thing is, I like it like that. I like my space, and I have it with Alphé.”

She looked at Dave and licked her lips. “However, introduce me.”

“Kat, you know Dave.”

“Do it formally, please.”
