Driving from Alexandria to Cypress Cove, Austin Macon’s entire body shook, he was so angry with himself.

“You are a jackass,” he cried, shaking his head. He pulled over so he could try to reach Calista again killing no one with his car. This time, she answered the phone.

“What were you thinking?”

“I’m so sorry,” he said, a sob catching in his throat. “I need to see you.”

“I have a restraining order against you, Austin. If you come near me, you’ll get arrested.”

“It was insane, I know! I’m so sorry. There has to be a way I can make it up to you.”

“What do you want?”

“I want to go back to where we were before I told those kids about their father.”

“That’s never going to happen. First, you alienated my family, Austin. After you promised me you wouldn’t do it, you went to the cops about Alphé. That was unforgivable.”

“They told me it was a closed case. I was jealous! Anyone could see that.”

“Anyone but stupid Calista,” she said. “You really shouldn’t call me again. I’m going to block you on my phone.”

“Calista, please don’t. Give it some time. I won’t call you again today. I’m on my way to the RV storage place now to pick up some stuff I forgot. Please let me see you.”

“No. We can’t see each other again, Austin. Goodbye.”

She got out her phone and tried to block the number like she’d seen Katrina do it on the kids’ iPads.

Back in her own house, she and her children left Alphé’s house so Lola could spend time with her own children. The things Alphé had said to her cycled through her head. He wanted a wife. She knew most of his peccadillos, so getting used to being with him would be easy enough.

Shivering, she thought of his hands on her breasts and then pictured Lola’s. She’d seen them when Lola was nursing Rumor. Everyone’s breasts were huge when they nursed, but Lola’s were always big; in a bathing suit, Lola was all tits and ass. Rodney used to tease Calista. “Your clothes don’t cost as much because you don’t have that big ass to cover.”

Now she imagined his penis buried there, and she shuddered. Having sex with Alphé would be a great comeuppance. “There you go, Rod. Now I’m screwing your brother.”

It wasn’t a reason to be with Alphé. Sitting at the kitchen table, she made a pro and con list, headed Reasons to Be with Alphé.

Pro—number one was financial security. It was the first thing that came to her mind, right or wrong. He wasn’t rich, but with the money from the four kids’ Social Security, it would be more than she’d had to live on since Rodney’s death.

Number two, all the children under the same roof.

Three, a father for Porter and Davina.

Four, regular sex, companionship.

Five, all the fish she could eat.

She laughed out loud writing that down.

Then came the cons.

Number one, drama. Alphé’s life was always strife with drama. She’d thought it would end when he divorced Lola, but it got worse. She didn’t want a full-time hobby, but if she married Alphé, she’d get one that was all consuming.

Number two, Katrina. Living with Alphé might destroy the bond they’d made. She longed to call her, but waited. They usually talked to each other in the afternoon.

Number three, another fisherman. The danger of an accident was there, and it was real. Could she go through that again? One thing she’d demand, that he had life insurance with her as the benefactor if anything happened to him.

Number four, Mae Beaumont. It was one thing to be snubbed as the wife of the favorite son, but to be snubbed all over again, that might be enough to confront her. She’d talk to Alphé about his mother if the relationship came to anything.
