“That’s a good thing. You stay put. I’ll run over to the rescue and make sure Annie and Kelly are okay.”

“Amber’s over there,” Maggie said.

“I won’t speak to her, okay? No worries. I’ll call you soon.”

He hugged her and kissed her again and left the cottage. Then he turned around. “Where’s Brulee?”

“Oh crap! Let me call Annie.”

Brulee was safe at the rescue, having escaped yet again. “Justin, bring her back, okay? She was a great protection from Austin.”

“Ha! Some great watchdog. I’ll be right back.”

Her phone beeped; it was Katrina calling.

“I need to see you,” she said.

“Are you crying? Kat…”

“Are you busy?”

“Austin Macon just came out of the woods again, and I had Justin and the sheriff here. But other than that, I’m not busy.”

“Is that guy for real? Do you feel like taking a boat ride, or should I get in my car?”

“As soon as Justin leaves, I’ll meet you in town. Come to the café unless you want to pick me up.”

“I’ll meet you at Café Delphine.”

They hung up just as Justin returned with a contrite Brulee. “Honestly, what kind of dog takes off when her mistress is being threatened by a jerk?”

“Aw, Brulee was scared,” Justin said, laughing.

“I’m going into town. Kat needs to see me about something.”

“Oh.” He looked at the floor.

“Justin, what’s going on?”

“Nothing.”

“You know something.”

“Go to town and find out on your own. I’m not going there.”

“Thanks!”

“Hey, I have to honor my word.”

“So you know something.”

“And it sounds like you’re going to know something soon, too.”

He waited while she locked up the house. Brulee was not going on this trip. Walking down the dock, he put his arm around her shoulders.

“We’re going to have to talk about renovating the guest room into a nursery.”

“Okay. You do whatever you want in there as soon as we find out what we’re having.”
