“I’m sure.”

Trying to explain to Dave on his first legal day with her she’d gotten pregnant right away didn’t seem wise. At the beginning of the next fiscal year, she’d be a primary officer in the company where she worked, and it would be nose to the grindstone. If she ever wanted to be a mother, now would be the time or give up her career goals. A nanny would have to be in place. It was almost to the minute at the rate she was going.

She figured she was due in October. The thought gave her the chills, the fiscal year started October one. She was cutting it close. No, it was better to wait until they had time to hash it out. He might be angry. They’d never discussed birth control, jumping into each other’s arms and doing it whenever they were together. She wondered if that uncontrollable desire for each other would cease now that they had endless time together.

“I love you so much, Dave.”

She hugged him hard, willing her flesh to meld with his. She’d said I love you before, but this time, it was really love. She’d do anything for him. Even marry him. Thankfully, he wasn’t asking for marriage, not yet anyway.

“I love you, too, my beautiful Katrina. I’m so happy.”

They hugged for a while with their eyes closed, reveling in the comfort of each other’s arms.

“Okay, we’d better get a move on. Our first outing as a couple.”

With his hands around her waist, he looked into her eyes. “Mine.”

“Yours.” With her head on his shoulder, she felt like they were at the precipice of something big. “Maggie’s is a safe place, too. Amber’s not prone to drop in there. The rescue, yes, but not the cottage. At least not uninvited.”

“I don’t care who knows about us. But I want to avoid trouble with her.”

“I agree, that’s why I say we need to stay out of town for as long as possible.”

“We should take food,” Katrina said.

“Help yourself. I have enough fried chicken in there to last a week.”

They worked together, assembling a picnic they thought Justin and Maggie would like.

He couldn’t help it; when they left the rear entrance to the house, he shielded her protectively walking to the garage.

“We’d better take the truck because of the road.”

He held her door for her and closed it. This would be the first time they’d be together in a vehicle, the first time going anywhere together. It felt momentous.

“I can’t get the feeling out of my head that us being together is going to be important.”

“Like king and queen?”

“No, that’s Justin and Maggie. I’m not sure. Something.”

“It’s nice you think we’re special. You are, but I’m a small-town cop.”

“You’re the sheriff for the entire parish. That’s huge. Don’t belittle yourself. By the way, do you have any vacation coming?”

“I do. I never take it.”

“Week after Easter, I have to go to San Francisco for a couple of days. Do you want to go?”

“I’d love to.”

“Great! I’ll give you dates, and you can schedule yourself a vacay.”

“I’ll pay for my own tickets.”

“You won’t have to. I have so many frequent flyer miles that we could go around the world free. My company also awards hotel perks, and I’m so far behind collecting anything like that because I didn’t have anyone to take along.”

They watched the scenery go by. “This is so beautiful. I always boat in and forget how isolated she’d be if it weren’t for the water.”
