“Someday, we can come here with our babies. Would we have to put life vests on them?”
“You thinkin’ ahead?”
Katrina looked at her and grinned. “I am. I found out today.”
Maggie grabbed her hand. “Kat, what are you saying?”
“I’m pregnant.”
“Oh god no, with Alphé’s spawn?”
Katrina fell back laughing. “I’ll tell you the entire story. Calista called and asked me to take her to Walmart.”
“Jeez.”
“Right. She missed a month or two. I decided it was a good time to take the test although I was sure, so I told her I’d take her. It’s all I’m good for, busing my girlfriends to get pregnancy tests. So anyway, we went, we took, we’re pregnant. But the thing is, she told me Alphé had had a vasectomy after Lola lost the baby. That jackass told me he would try to get me pregnant, and he couldn’t!”
“Thank God it’s Dave’s! Oh, what a relief. Our babies are going to be cousins!”
Maggie wiped her eyes, the full impact of the news not hitting yet. That would happen later.
“Yes, but he doesn’t know. I need to give him some time, a couple of days at least, to recover. He just made a major life change leaving her. Dave has never lived alone. I know that is a problem for some women. It’s not a problem for me, though. I’ll take him any way he comes.”
“I’m so happy for you, Kat.” She hugged her friend. “I’m so happy for Dave. When do you think you’re due?”
“In late October, which is iffy timing.”
“Because of the job.”
“Right. Promise me you won’t tell Justin. That guy has the biggest mouth, and you know he’ll tell Dave.”
“Tell me about it! It must be because he’s a vet. It’s like gossip central over there. Oh shit. I just thought of something.”
“What?”
“Amber worked at the clinic a few weeks ago and I’m going to tell him to never do that again. He doesn’t think I know because I actually controlled my mouth and said nothing.”
“Don’t fight with the guy over me.”
“No, I promise. But finally, a reason to confront him. I just wonder if it was an isolated incident.”
“You don’t have to worry about Justin.”
“I know, but I don’t take it for granted that she’s not a threat.”
“Why the hell is Amber an issue for both of us?” Katrina lamented.
“I guess because we love brothers. Are you going to tell Annie?”
“Yes, as soon as I tell Dave, she’ll be next.”
“I just thought of something! If Alphé had a vasectomy, Calista’s baby is—”
“Austin Macon’s. She’s not saying anything to anyone. Alphé doesn’t need to know until the last possible second, and Macon, never.”
“She’s going to hide it?”
“Right. Secret baby.”
