“What in the hell are you talking about?”

Squinting at Katrina, Maggie seethed and Katrina looked away, trying not to laugh.

“Women!” Annie shouted. “Let’s stay calm, shall we? Rose and Mags, here’s your chance to get your expectations clarified.”

“It’s Maggie’s responsibility to invite me to see the baby,” Rose announced, annoyed.

“Mother, I work full-time. You don’t recognize it as work because I do it from home, but I work. You’ve never punched a time clock in your life. I’d like you to call me and come to help out with the baby.”

“Fine. But I don’t particularly want to babysit.” She said this with her nose in the air.

“What is it that you want then? I don’t have the time to sit around and schmooze if that’s what you’re getting at.”

“What is this?” Rose snapped, swirling her finger directed at the three friends.

“It’s my closest friends with their babies visiting me,” Maggie said. “I’m allowed to have friends, correct?”

A male voice rang out, “Are men allowed?”

They turned to see handsome Vic Chastain strolling down the dock with his two hunky sons behind him.

“Oh my God, will you look at that? That’s a triad of men,” Annie said. “Don’t they have a long-lost brother?”

“They might,” Rose mumbled. “Anyway, you’re married.”

“So what?” Annie snapped. “Come on down, Dr. Chastain.”

“They are handsome,” Rose said proudly. “It was a shock Vic Chastain looked my way.”

“Why?” Katrina asked.

“Remember, I grew up here. He was in a different league than I was.”

“And what league was that?” Maggie asked, suddenly interested. “He’s older than you are, too, Mother.”

“The men are here now. I’ll tell you another time.”

“The food is ready, if mothers and babies would care to join us,” Justin said.

“I’m ready,” Maggie replied, handing him the baby. “We’d better haul all this stuff back because one good gust will send it all into the bay.”

The dragged everything back to the cottage and the party continued on the porch. Justin’s barbeque tasted delicious and they took turns holding babies so the mothers could eat in peace.

The sun was just beginning to set when Annie said she’d better head home.

“I’d love to stay but I’m afraid of driving through those woods after dark.”

“See! Someone listens to my tales!” Rose shouted, a little worse for wine.

“Yes, thank so much for that, Rose,” Annie drawled. “I’ll never be the same.”

They helped her pack her car, and then Dave said he wanted to go, so they were next.

“Please, son, wait,” Vic said. “I have something to tell you and Justin.”

“Do you know what he’s talking about?” Dave asked his brother.

“No. Unless it’s more about selling the farm and the clinic.”
