“It’ll be okay,” Katrina said, hoping it was true. “You and Justin are perfect together.”

“What about you and Dave?”

“We’re perfect together not married. He mentioned it once and thankfully not again. I can focus on you and Justin getting married. That will be enough for a while.”

A caterwaul got their attention for a moment when one of the babysitters caught Davie as he was preparing to catapult over the fence, and he was pissed not to be allowed the adventure.

“My kid is trying to escape,” Katrina said, barking out a laugh. “I guess he’s going to be the troublemaker in the group.”

“Nah, he’s farther along developmentally than the other kids right now. Annie says even Stevie watches Davie for ideas.”

“Unfortunately, I don’t think he’ll be ahead of the other kids for long. It will level off and they’ll move beyond him. At least that’s what the pediatrician says.”

That sat like a lead brick in their bellies.

“I wouldn’t accept that,” Maggie said. “I wouldn’t listen to any negative bullshit.”

“I haven’t but we’re trying to be realistic.”

“What about another baby?” Maggie asked. “Have you thought about having another?”

“I have. I wish I would have gotten pregnant right away. He is so good with other kids. What about you? Do you want another one?”

“Now that my ass is finally down to a reasonable size again, I’d have to weigh the pluses and minuses. And working with a toddler is hard enough. I don’t know if I could do it with a newborn again.”

“During the week, it would be nice if the nanny Luanne could take Davie to a play date situation like we have when we go to the park. I wonder if Calista would do a real, licensed day care.”

“I’ll just ask her,” Maggie said. “I’ll fund it for her if she wants to do one out of her house.”

“Do you mean like the rescue? You’d have a day care here at Bayou Cottage?”

“Not right here, but on the land somewhere. Unless I could find a place in town. What do you think? Would you bring Davie all the way out here?”

“I wouldn’t, but the nanny would if a driver brought her,” she said, laughing.

“I’m going to look into it,” Maggie said. “As soon as Calista gets here with her brood, we can pin her down.”

“You’re too good to be true,” Katrina said, holding up her glass to clink.

There was commotion out in the yard with new arrivals.

“Hello! Looking for wine!” It was Annie Markley, formerly Casson, and following her, another tall, dark, and handsome man, Chris Harcourt, the long-lost half brother Annie had asked for.

“Wow, do they make a gorgeous couple or what?” Maggie whispered.

“We’re up here on the porch,” Katrina called out.

Annie handed baby Stevie to Angela.

“I’m using your babysitter,” Annie told Katrina.

“There are several at our service, thankfully. Davie has been a wild man today.”

“Hi, ladies. Where are my brothers?” Chris asked.

“They’re out in the barn,” Maggie answered, handing him a beer.

Chris leaned over to kiss Annie and disappeared, headed to the barn.
