“He asks because he knows I’ll be jealous if I can’t go along.”

“You’ve got four horses,” Katrina said. “Go. I’ll keep an eye on Tina.”

“Seriously? Justin and I haven’t been out together in weeks. She’s sleeping right in her little chair here.”

“Go,” Katrina said. Then she looked at Bridget. “You don’t ride, do you?”

“Oh, hell no,” she said, laughing. “I didn’t even know Luke rode.”

He bent down to kiss her on the lips. “There’s a lot you don’t know about me, Lieutenant. Stick around a while.”

“I will,” she said, grinning at him.

The quartet left for the barn and Katrina turned to Bridget. “You two seem like you really hit it off.”

“Do we? I’m not sure. We don’t know each other. It’s scary.”

“Bridget, it was the same thing with Dave and I. We were both involved with other people when we got together and I got pregnant the first time we did it. I pinch myself all the time because of my good fortune. Dave could have been a jerk.”

“Aw, he’s a wonderful man,” Bridget said. “You two are perfect together.”

“If I may say so, so are you and Luke. You look like you were made for each other physically if there’s such a thing. I said you two were Barbie and Ken the first time I saw you together.”

“Oh God, how funny,” Bridget said. “He is superhot.”

“Bridget, so are you! When you hopped off Val Amotte’s boat in a thong and not an ounce of cellulite, Maggie and I almost choked we were so jealous.”

“That was awful of me to do in front of people I didn’t know. I’m so sorry. I realize how it must have looked.”

“You were perfectly fine. You covered up right away.”

“I have cellulite, by the way. Especially now,” she said, laughing.

“It’s so not important,” Katrina said. “I only mentioned it because you don’t seem to know you’re hot, too.”

“It’s just not part of my lexicon; do you know what I mean? I want to be known as a war nurse, not a hot chick.”

“I’m sorry,” Katrina said passionately. “We have to get to know you, Bridget. All we know right now is what we see and it’s the beautiful, fit woman.”

They high-fived and laughed together. Bridget smoothed her bathing suit cover-up over her little belly. “Once this thing grows, that will be all people will see.”

“You got it! My belly entered a room before I did.”

They talked comfortably, getting to know one another. A half hour later, the thunder of hooves and laughter announced that the riders had returned. Maggie was first back on the porch.

“Justin is putting up Dale for me in case Tina gave you a hard time,” she said.

“I forgot she was even here. She never woke up.”

“That was so much fun, I forgot what it was like to ride with other people. I’m always alone when I go out now.”

“Why don’t you leave the baby with your mother so you can get back to the wild horse meetings you used to love?” Katrina asked.

“I probably should. She’s bugging me constantly about babysitting, but I just haven’t been able to allow it yet.”

“Why don’t you want her to sit for you?” Bridget asked.

“For all her claims of hating it here in Cypress Cove, my mother has more superstitions than you can imagine and I don’t know how comfortable I am with that way of thinking around my daughter.”
