“That’s so generous of her.”

“I wouldn’t be doing it otherwise. Steve doesn’t pay any child support, and his father owns the house I’m living in, so for now, that’s it. I’m not sure how I’m managing, to tell you the truth, except Maggie pays me way more than I should make working part-time. I’m careful, pinching pennies, and there’s not much left for recreation. That’s why I’m here every chance I get for the company. Annie the freeloader.”

“I bet Maggie doesn’t think that,” Chris said.

“What doesn’t Maggie think?” Maggie asked behind them.

They looked up to see her approaching with folding chairs.

“That I’m a freeloader,” Annie said.

“You’re not a freeloader, but I’m worried an alligator is gonna get your feet, at least according to my mother.”

Annie and Chris pulled their feet out of the water and got up and sat in the chairs.

“So, Chris. Here we are,” Maggie said, grinning at him. “The brother all the single women in town have been waiting for.”

“You told! Thanks, Maggie,” Annie said, laughing.

“Ha!” Chris said. “Yes, I’m ready to move here. I told Justin I’m looking for a job.”

“I’m so glad. You should be here so we can torture you like we torture each other.”

Maggie and Annie high-fived, laughing.

“I’m ready,” Chris said. “Ready to be tortured.”

Now that he had the job and was making the move, Annie could take a deep breath.

“I feel like I’ve been holding my breath for the last year, and suddenly everything is coming together.”

“It’s finally coming together for us,” Chris said. “What a year.”

“When will you be here?”

“I’m just packing up now, so I’ll see you after lunch.” Then, in his soft Southern drawl, he added, “I can’t wait to be inside of you. I’m getting hard thinking about your velvety pussy.”

“Oh my God. You have such a way with words,” she said, choking.

“I’m thinking about eating you, too. My mouth is watering. I’ll probably get a speeding ticket on my way.”

Annie buried her face in her hands, laughing until she could compose herself.

“I can’t wait, either,” Annie said, snickering. “This has been the longest five days.”

“Pretty soon we never have to be apart again.”

“I love you, Chris,” she said.

“I love you, too.”

She ended the call, her head swirling. He’d asked her to marry him before, and she’d avoided giving him an answer. Barely divorced, she didn’t want to rush into marriage again. But he was so hot and so kind and giving, plus he appeared to care about Stevie, carrying him around, being affectionate, giving him attention. Why was she resisting?

First thing after hanging up, she called Katrina.

“Are you home?” she asked.

“I just arrived in New York for a quick meeting, but I’ll be home tonight so I don’t miss our coffee date in the morning! What’s up?”
