“No. The earlier the better, less noise for the sound man. Makeup will take at least an hour, and then we can get started before rush hour.”

“Okay, six it is. That means I’ll pick you up at five-thirty, Laura.”

“Thank you,” I said. I wanted to leave soon. It had been a long, emotional day.

“Would you see me later? I’d say for drinks, but that’s not enough. I’d really like to take you to dinner.”

It was my turn to look at him sidelong. “What about the girl at the desk? I don’t think she’d like that very much.”

“Jennifer will be fine with whatever I do, as long as I level with her.”

I doubted that but let it go. It wasn’t my business. “Truthfully, I wanted to get back to my room and try to get some sleep. It sounds like we have to be up before dawn.”

“We do. But you have to eat, right? What if I come by your neighborhood? I’m in Midtown, too. I could probably walk to your place.”

He was pressuring me. It’s one thing I can’t tolerate. But now I had to work with the guy. I’d sweet talk him out of it.

“Thank you so much, Ryan. But I insist, I can’t go out tonight. I drove from Chicago to New York two days ago and never recovered from the trip. If I’m going to be on camera tomorrow…”

“Okay, you’re right. I’m sorry. Maybe we can do it tomorrow night.”

“After working with me all day, you might change your mind,” I said.
