“It’s easy. I need the income, and I want an easy job. Like I said, I want to flit around town. I’m too young to retire and too old to be a cop full-time. I just don’t have the energy.”

“Why’d you leave your last job?”

“I didn’t like the new administration. My replacement does things like drive the kids to college and pick up her laundry. No. I didn’t even take my own kids to college.”

“How’d they get there?” I asked.

“The bus. How else? They could take the same bus since they’re close enough together.”

“Gotcha,” I said. My mother had rarely had the time to take me back to school. I knew the bus routes by heart. “Okay, well, as far as I’m concerned, you’re hired, Myrla. I’ll speak with Eimy and get her feedback and be in touch.”

“I’m psyched.”

“Oh, I must ask you to keep my business private from the Babylon crowd. They are the nosiest group of women I’ve ever met.”

“You have my word.” She got up and reached for her coat thrown across the chair. “I’m anxious to meet the baby, too.”

“The production crew leaves for Taiwan in two weeks, so if Eimy agrees, we’ll get you together soon. I’m looking forward to it.”

I walked her to the door, and we shook hands.

As soon as I could, I called Eimy to tell her the former mayor’s wife’s personal assistant had applied for a job, and she was Dominican.

“What’s the catch?” she asked.

“Ha! What do you mean?”

“It’s too perfect. There has to be something. She’s a felon, or eighty years old, or needs to live in.”

“Ha! None of those things. But she is a trans woman.”

“Oh, no. She was a guy?”

“She was a guy who is now a woman. I really like her. You have to meet her. Plus, I think the baby will be safe with her. She’s big, and she used to be on the mayor’s security detail before she transitioned.”

“What kind of nanny experience does she have?”

“She raised two sons.”

“Oh, jeez, I don’t know,” Eimy said.

“How about you meet her tomorrow?”

“Okay, I can do that. I’ll probably need to use her because your father wants me to come in and interview at his firm.”

“Oh, wow. That was fast,” I said. “I’m glad, though. It will be an opportunity to get some experience.”

“That’s what I thought,” she said. “I can’t thank you enough.”

We chatted some more, and then I thought of Ryan. I wondered if I owed her the truth.

“You know, when we talked the other night, I said there wasn’t anything between me and Ryan. I’d kept him at arm’s length the entire time we worked together.”

“I know, and I can’t believe it. The guy is so hot.”

“He is, for sure. Anyway, he showed up at my door last night, and one thing led to another, and he stayed the night.”

“Oh, man! I’m so happy! You two belong together. Now tell me you’re coming with us to Taiwan.”
