“I hope they go forward,” he said. “We’re both busy enough to keep things interesting.”

“I’m about to get busier,” I said.

“Is that right? Can you share with me how?”

“Sure. I’m going to look into going into the police academy.”

“Why?” he asked, grimacing. “What difference would that make?”

“If you want to be a cop, you have to go to the academy.”

“Since when do you want to be a cop?”

“Since now,” I said. “I just decided.” The truth was that my job was already bordering on boring. I didn’t enjoy being confined to the hospital, but I didn’t tell him that.

“No offense, but I don’t see you in a blue uniform, walking a beat.”

“There’s a lot you don’t know about me, Ryan. And a blue uniform walking a beat is exactly who I am.”

He raised his hands in surrender and quickly apologized. “No malice intended.”

Men were getting on my nerves. “Are you working tomorrow?” I asked, wanting to change the subject.

“Nope, I’m done until we leave. I’ll go back to my place in the morning and pack. The weather is mild there compared to New York. I have to remember that when I’m packing.”

“Six weeks away during winter. Lucky you!”

“I wish we were going in January and February,” he replied. “Miss the really ugly weather.”

My phone beeped. “I’ll get it later,” I said. “It’s Eimy. She probably wants to talk baby.”

“Get it,” he said. “I’ll start cleaning up.”

I answered. “Hey, Eimy.”

“Am I calling too late?”

“No, not at all. We’re just finishing dinner.”

“Jeez, it’s late for dinner.”

“Um, we had some business to take care of. What’s up?”

“I have news I wanted to tell you about right away. Myrla is going to stay here with the baby while I’m gone.”

To say I was annoyed would be an understatement. I had to think for a moment before I opened my mouth, so I just said, “Oh.”

“I know we had it all planned, but it felt simpler just to have her come here, where all Yasmine’s things are.”

“So, she’s going to be there twenty-four/seven with no other eyes.”

Eimy paused for a few seconds. “Yes. It was actually her idea,” she finally said, which made me feel worse. Maybe Myrla didn’t want to have to interact with me after all.

“Okay. Thank you for telling me,” I said, ready to move on. “Have fun in Taiwan!”

“Thank you again! I can’t wait to go.”

We didn’t bother with more small talk, the final insult. I guessed Eimy, Myrla, and I weren’t going to be bosom buddies after all.
