“We all know that. As lovely as Randy is, he still thinks like a man. And Randy can justify anything. The man is the great rationalizer.”

“Yeah, he didn’t say anything to me until I was here with you. I’m not a big traveler, either. If I get that cottage, I’ll probably never leave Babylon.”

“You got it. I hate leaving and rarely do,” Pam said.

“And I’m never leaving,” Hocus added. “You know, if you don’t mind my saying so, I’m getting a powerful reading from you, just sitting beside you. Can I look at your palm?”

“You read palms?”

“She does,” Pam said.

Though somewhat the skeptic, I felt compelled to let her touch me, so I stuck out my hand.

“It smells like tuna fish,” I said, and Hocus barked out a laugh.

“No worries. I made it, remember.” She cradled my hand in her warm, dry palm.

I closed my eyes, suddenly relaxed and tired. “I could fall asleep,” I murmured.

“She has that power over people,” Pam whispered. “I feel the same way. It’s her energy drawing yours out.”

“That makes me sound like an energy vampire,” Hocus said, clucking her tongue. “She’s stressed out, and I’m taking her stress. Wow, you’ve been a busy girl. I see a line up to your door.”

“Oh, God, don’t say anything out loud about it.”

Hocus chuckled. “I won’t. That’s part of your past.”

“It was a necessity,” I said, opening my eyes to look at her.

She just looked compassionate, not judgmental. “I understand. But it left a lingering problem. You have men trouble. Men who want something from you that you don’t want to give. Men who take what they don’t deserve.”

“Ryan,” I mumbled.

“Yes, Ryan is a pain in the ass of womankind,” Hocus said.

“Hocus, don’t badmouth Ryan. I love him,” Pam said.

Hocus waved her words away. “But you are so strong, Laura, that Ryan can’t compete with you, and he knows it. He’s afraid of you, actually. I’m not holding his palm, but his energy is in you.”

“We had sex a few days ago.” I opened one eye and looked at Pam to see her frowning and shaking her head. “I’m sorry, Pam.”

“It’s fine. I hope he wore a condom.”

“He did.”

“Can I continue?” Hocus asked, a hint of disgust in her voice.

“Carry on,” Pam said. “Sorry.”

“Having sex with you is a drop in the bucket for a man like Ryan. He’s been inside so many women, there’s not much of Ryan left to give. For you, on the other hand, I see great things, my dear. Powerful things. And a great love.”

“Oh, God, I hope it’s not Detective Spinoza,” I said, grimacing.

“No, this is with someone you haven’t met yet. He’s older than you are, too. But you won’t even notice that. The chemistry is so powerful between the two of you that others can’t look at you when you’re together. It’s almost indecent.”

“Yes!” Pam shouted. “Oops, sorry.”

“Now I can’t wait,” I said.
