“Me, too. Right now, it’s an escape. The farther I can get from Manhattan, the better.”

“The baby you found?”

“Yes, my involvement is still bothering me. Issues with the mother, etcetera.”

I thought of Ryan but decided since what we’d had wasn’t much more than a week long fling, I didn’t need to bring it up. One secret shared during a first date was enough.

“Have you heard anything more?”

“It’s possible she’s in Mexico City with her grandmother. And if it’s true, that is such a relief, because the father is incapable of caring for a baby.”

“I’m happy for you, and for her,” he said.

Light from the moon and stars reflected on the calm sea. “The surf has been so wild lately that when you’re on the beach, you can’t hear yourself talk. This is really nice.”

“I bet the storms are nice, too,” he replied. “I hope I’m here when there’s a storm.”

“You can be here whenever you want,” I said. “I like your company.”

“And I like yours,” he said, letting go of my hand and slipping his arm around my shoulders.

“That’s my stepmother’s place,” I said, pointing to Pam’s house.

“Wow, it’s a mansion.”

“It really is. But it started out as a cottage.”

“So, are you going to let me take a crack at some of the projects I mentioned?”

“If you’re still around next spring, you can garden all you want. I know nothing about it.”

We walked to the causeway, and that was enough for me. “Are you ready to turn back?”

“Sure. We have a fire to build.”

“I can’t wait. It will be my first fire in my own place. I’ll have to take pictures to send to my friends who are still in college.”

“Ha! That’s pretty funny.”

“They’ll be so jealous. We’ll have to do a selfie.”

“I’ll break your phone.”

“You will not. No worries about social media, either. I don’t want my former clients knowing where I am.”

“Smart move. It’s discouraged in my line of business.”

I looked at him, nodding. “Yes, I can definitely see why. You know, I’m interested in what you do because I have a master’s degree in criminal justice. Right before I left Manhattan, I considered entering the police academy. But now it’s pointless because I never want to leave Babylon.”

“What about private investigation?”

I didn’t answer right away. Private investigation! “I’ve never even thought of that. Well, now I have to look into it, because that is exactly what I’d like to do. And you could help me.”

“The ME and the PI?” he said, laughing. “We would make such a great team. I see us on television together.”

“Well, I wouldn’t go that far. Maybe you, but my TV days are over, especially with my father gone.”

“He’d be so on board with this,” Will said. “Think of it, along with Adventure Trek and Saving New York.”
