Lisa opened up, and without saying a word, they reached for each other and hugged.

“You heard?”

“Alison told me,” Lisa whispered.

“I want to find out as much as I can, just in case I get a chance to investigate.”

“You want to talk to me?” Lisa asked, watching her.

“I do.Willyou talk to me?”

“I’ll tell you what I will tell the police. Alan Stone has already called me. He asked me to come down, and I refused. He can come here.”

“You should have Dan sit in,” Laura warned.

“He’s an estate lawyer. What good is he going to do?”

“He can just be here, as a safety net.”

Ryan came into the kitchen, and seeing Laura, he took a step back. “Oops, private discussion?”

“No,” Lisa answered. “Do you want coffee, Laura?”

“Yes, I’ll take coffee.”

“You two, go sit in the living room. Laura, tell Ryan.”

“Why do I feel like it’s something I don’t need to hear?” he asked, frowning.

“You need to know, Ryan,” Laura said. “Lily Porter was murdered. Her body washed up on the beach last night.”

“Ugh. Have a seat,” he said, pointing to the other end of the couch.

“Will and I found her. I thought it was a seal sleeping on the beach.”

“Do they know what killed her?” Ryan asked.

“What did they say online?” Laura asked in return.

“Just that her body washed up on the beach.”

“She was murdered,” Laura said. “A bullet right between the eyes.”

“God, right here on our beach!” Ryan said. “How awful.”

Listening to Laura’s revelation about the bullet in the head, Lisa felt the blood drain from her face. Quickly turning her back, she could barely see the coffeepot as her eyes filled with tears. She wiped them with the backs of her shaking hands, trying to figure out what had happened after she’d leaned against the tree to close her eyes for a moment that night. She’d fallen right to sleep and had no idea how long she’d been out. A crash had woken her. Could it have been a gunshot?

Something else had happened to Lily between then and this morning, something tragic, but something that got Lisa off the hook. She hadn’t killed Lily after all. Her hands still shook violently. Taking a deep breath, she slowly pulled herself together.

She composed herself and fixed a tray of coffee and pastries. With a fake smile plastered across her face, she picked up the tray.

“Just like my mother,” she said, carrying it into the living room. “Have you ever been to Pam’s house and left without powdered sugar all over the front of your shirt?”

Laura chuckled. “It’s true. Pastries are always part of our visits.”

With hands still shaking so badly that she had to wait until she calmed down a little to pick up a cup of coffee, Lisa let Laura ask her questions.

“Why do I need to be here?” Ryan asked, squirming a little.
