That night, the dispatch operator, Janelle, called Alan. Lily had gone through the switchboard, hinting that a detective had taken advantage of her and she couldn’t remember his name.

“I knew she wasn’t calling about Henry, and you’re the only other male detective under sixty.”

“Okay, Janelle, thanks. I’ll take care of it.”

He hung up, pulling his sweatpants on.

“What’s wrong?” Shelly asked.

“Nothing. I’ll go out in the living room. Go back to sleep.”

He closed the bedroom door, walked through the dark house, and grabbed his coat. Out in the garage, he called Lily’s number.

“Did you enjoy seeing me this afternoon?” he asked with an edge to his voice Lily couldn’t have missed, even though she didn’t know him all that well.

“Yes, I did. That’s why I called.”

“You called and lied to the operator about me?”

“I’m sorry. I wanted to make sure you’d see me again.”

“Lily, trust me when I tell you that if you ever, evercall my job again, or call my house, or do anything underhanded like that, you’ll never hear from me or see me again. I don’t care if I lose my job. Do you understand me?”

“I’m sorry! You didn’t leave me your cell phone number, and I wanted to talk to you.”

“Don’t call me. Don’t text me. If you see me, it will be when it’s convenient for me to see you. Do you get it? Tell me you understand what I’m getting at.”

“I understand.”

“I’m hanging up now. Go to bed like a normal person.”

He ended the call and went back into the house. Shelly was waiting, nude, standing in the kitchen, drinking a glass of water.

“What was that all about?”

“I have a crazy suspect. What are you doing up?”

“I’m worried, Alan. Just worried.”

“Go back to bed, Shelly. I need to work for a while. I won’t wake you when I come back.”

“I was sort of hoping you would, Alan. This is getting ridiculous.”

There was no way he’d get it up, but he’d take care of her. Grabbing her hand, he led her to the bed, her giggles verifying that his method had worked. He laid her down on the bed and kissed her, then ran his tongue down her body until he hit the spot, quickly satisfying her. This was one act he had not done to Lily and hopefully never would.

The next time he went by the coffee shop, she was leaving for the day. “Do you want to get together?” he asked, forgetting his resolve to stay away, insanity mounting.

Two days of pressure had built up, and he wanted to get inside her generous body and blow it apart.

“I can get together now,” she said excitedly. “Do you want to go to my apartment?”

“No. Meet me at the beach access road off Sea View, just south of the causeway.”

“Okay. I’ll get my car.”

They met in the parking lot, and Alan got into her car. They made out like teenagers for a while before getting down to business. With her head in his lap, he could smell her hair, vanilla and grease from the kitchen at the coffee shop. But closing his eyes, all he knew was her warm mouth on his body, and in seconds, he came.

“Oh, God. I’m sorry, I should have warned you,” he said, not sorry at all.
