“That gun you uncovered on Sea View? Covered with Alan’s fingerprints.Covered.No others.”

“What the fuck!”

“Um, yeah. And about five minutes ago, Chadwick got a call from the DA’s office that a private investigator, Laura Long…”

“Yeah, I know Laura. The gun was found at her house.”

“Well, the Porters, both mom and dad, told her Lily was having an affair with Alan Stone.”

“No way.No fucking way.” He walked into the living room, his eyes on that package, and plunked down on the couch.

“He hasn’t been right. I mean, we’re all beat. But he looks awful, and I can tell he’s stressed out more than usual.”

“Did they bring him in yet?”

“He was here.”

“Ugh. Okay, well, listen to this. I got a package today that contains a white T-shirt with something red smeared on it, like maybe lipstick, and something dried on it. I hate to say it, but maybe semen. It was mailed without a return address, and there was a note attached that said ‘Wear gloves. Evidence.’”

“Get it in here. I’ll wait.”

“Okay, on my way.”

All he could think of was Alan. They would never be friends, but he’d worked with him for a long time and respected the man. He couldn’t see him murdering anyone. He couldn’t even imagine Alan Stone with Lily Porter. Why? It made no sense. It just proved that you never knew what people were capable of.

Since Shelly had moved out, Alan had no reason to rush home. It was a relief that she was gone, but the relief was short-lived. Because it didn’t take long for the news to reach him that she had moved in with Dan. Julie called him.

“Have coffee with me. I have something to tell you,” she said.

“No can do, Jules. I’m up to my eyeballs.”

“You didn’t tell me Shelly moved out,” she replied.

“I don’t talk to you anymore, so why would I tell you? And how did you know?”

“I took the baby by Dan’s yesterday, and she was at the house.”

Shelly and Dan. Alan rubbed his forehead, trying to wrap his brain around that piece of news. He wasn’t jealous, but he was hurt. That was the final nail in the coffin of his friendship with Dan Chua.

“Touché,” Alan said.

“Do you think that’s why he’s doing it?”

“No. Shelly’s a great girl. I’m sure he was smitten.”

“What was happening with the two of you?” Julie asked.

“She was sick of my shit.”

“Yeah, I get it. It doesn’t take long. Just ask me.”

“Thanks, Julie. You’re so compassionate.”

“Hey, I told you, didn’t I? Now you can run into them at the Organic Bonanza and not be shocked.”

“Yeah, I guess I do have that to be thankful for. You’re all heart.”

“Look, when you’re ready to stop being a jackass, give me a call.”
