“Shelly, I’m so terribly sorry. Did Alan realize you’d seen him that night?”

“No, I’m sure he didn’t. I started following him after that. He saw her a lot, usually during the night after I was supposed to be asleep.”

“Where’d you go to see them?”

“Their favorite place was the park by the marina. But he went to her apartment, too.”

“Shelly, that’s just awful. I’m not sure what I would do in that situation.”

“Yes, you don’t know until you’re faced with it. I never did confront him. He’d already lost interest in me; that was clear. He had stopped having sex with me, too, which was the worst. The humiliation his rejection caused—I can’t even describe it.”

“Wow, so you knew all along that Alan was seeing someone else.”

“I did. My father was so upset, I can’t even tell you how angry he is about the whole thing. He loved Alan! That’s the thing. My parents loved Alan. Anyway, who’s your boyfriend?”

“Will Peterson.”

“You meanDocPeterson, the pathologist?”

“Yes. You know him?”

“Yes! I work in the emergency room at the hospital. Of course I know him.”

“Gosh, it’s such a small world,” Laura said, frowning. She hoped Shelly wasn’t going to put two and two together, the coroner and the PI. It was obvious Dan hadn’t said anything about Laura’s profession.

“It’s so nice you have such a great guy,” Shelly replied, sounding sincere.

“Dan’s wonderful, too,” Laura said determinedly. “He’s a great father and a great man. You’re doing okay.”

“It’s just that I don’t love Dan,” Shelly said.

Laura felt awful that Samantha and Henry had heard her say that about Dan.

“You just met the guy. You’re still grieving the loss of the relationship with Alan.”

“And the betrayal, among other things. I might never recover from this. The murder, the publicity, it’s too much. And Dan was with Lily, too.”

“I’m so sorry.”

They’d reached the causeway.

“Thank you for listening. I feel like a chump after moving in with Dan. I should have moved back home. My parents would have protected me.”

“Why do you need protection?”

“I don’t know. I just feel like something’s brewing. Do you know what I mean? I can’t relax.”

“It’s the uncertainty, I’m sure. I hate that, too. Shall we head back?”

“I guess I have to face the day.”

While they ran up the beach to the causeway, Henry and Samantha followed slowly along Sea View, listening.

“Aw! Laura is pregnant!” Henry said.

“She mentioned it when I wired her.”

“I have to remember to congratulate her. Wait! Listen!”
