“He doesn’t care if you come over. He’ll be happy to see you. But I’m busy, so you can unload on him.”

“Thanks, Lisa.”

“Well, what do you expect?”

“Actually, I expect exactly how you’re treating me,” he said, snickering. “Okay, please tell Ryan I’m on my way.”

Lisa ended the call and went into the living room, where Ryan was holding the baby in his left arm and painting a scene from the window overlooking the ocean with his right hand.

“Dan’s on his way.”

“Okay. I bet he’s upset about Shelly moving out.”

“I doubt it. Laura said he already has a date with that cop.”

Samantha Cordis arrived at the courthouse that afternoon with one mission,

to see Alan Stone in his temporary holding cell. She was going to tell him Shelly had moved back into his house. To be sure, she had driven by just as Shelly closed the garage door and was walking up the path to the porch. She’d let herself into the house and shut the door. Yep, Shelly was trespassing. But it was up to Alan to make her leave.

Samantha stood at the counter, waiting for the guard to let Alan know she was coming back in case he was using the toilet or had just gotten out of the shower. She’d give him that much respect.

“Come on back, Detective,” the guard said.

She followed him through the catacombs of the courthouse to the brightly lit jail cell, where a thin and haggard Alan waited to see her, expectation all over his face.

“You believe me, don’t you, Samantha? Let me take a lie detector test.”

“I can arrange that, Alan. It’s all the evidence. You know that, right? It all points to you. But I didn’t come for that reason.”

“What’s wrong now?”

“She moved back into your house.”

He smacked his hand on the bars. “No fucking way.”

“Yes, she did. You need to get your lawyer on that right away.”

“I can’t believe this. She set me up, Sam! I didn’t kill Lily. I was going to break up with Shelly so I could be with Lily, and then Lily dropped the bomb and said she was in love with someone else.”

“Who?”

“I have no idea,” Alan said, sitting on the concrete bunk. “I haven’t been able to mourn her death because of this. I’m not guilty, Sam. I couldn’t murder anyone. I did handle Shelly’s gun out of curiosity. That was it. Were my prints on the gun case? I bet they weren’t. I never touched the thing.

“After I left Lily that night, I came back to the precinct and worked for a couple of hours. I can account for every minute I was out. There are security cameras all over the city. You can track my every movement.”

“I’ll look into it, Alan.”

It was true, they’d tracked Shelly’s whereabouts, but not Alan’s. There were no recent videos of him anywhere but at the precinct, courthouse, hospital, and marina.

“I’m not sure what it will prove, though. Why was she half naked on the beach?”

“I didn’t have sex with her on the beach!” he cried. “Only in my car or at the park. We hardly ever went to her apartment, and a couple of times we went to a hotel. But never, ever on the beach. I never even walked with her on the beach. I actually hate the beach.”

“I’ll check it out, Alan. I’m not sure it’s going to do any good at this point.”

“Don’t people on Sea View have security cameras on their houses? You should be able to see someone on the beach at the time she was murdered.”

“We have footage, but the person is disguised in a dark hoodie and sunglasses, and that could be half the population of Babylon, including you.”
