“Well, this is what Chris said.” He related the conversation.

“You’re damn right I’m going to call my aunt. She has a lot of nerve. What happens at Bayou Cottage, stays at Bayou Cottage, and she just broke that rule.”

“Don’t cause trouble between you and your aunt.”

“Justin, I’ve had it with my entire family.”

“Well, it’s Sunday. Let’s just have a nice time today with your friends and my brothers. I’m going to fire up the grill so you won’t have to cook.”

“I wasn’t planning on it. You know Katrina brings food for an army.”

“I want to do my caveman thing and do a side of beef. Let her know that.”

“I will. They can bring sides.”

While he fed Tina waffles and poured coffee for Maggie, she keyed in Katrina’s number.

“Are you guys alive?”

“You know we’re up at seven with this wild child,” Katrina said, watching Davie hang upside down by bars they’d installed under the counter for just the thing. “What’s going on there?”

“We danced last night with Annie and Chris. Won first place, of course. Justin’s cooking beef today so bring sides.”

“Okay, Dave’s making his famous potato salad already.”

“With ten pounds of potatoes?” Maggie asked, barking out a laugh.

“Dave, Maggie wants to know how many pounds of potatoes you’re using.”

“Tell her ten. She won’t have to cook for a week.”

“Did you hear that?” Katrina asked, laughing.

“I heard it. God bless Dave and his generous cooking. Okay, so here’s the gossip.”

She told her about Aunt Elizabeth spilling the beans about Annie and Steve Casson having sex at their first meeting to Chris’s ex-wife and kids.

“Did she tell them they banged each other up against the cottage?”

“I have no idea. I hope not. Anyway, I have a new respect for his ex-wife. She didn’t want to hear it, so she feigned a headache and they left before dinner.”

“Wow, the ex being loyal. And she told Chris this?” Katrina asked.

“Supposedly because he just called Justin and told him, asking me to duke it out with Aunt Elizabeth.”

“Honestly, those two women are troublemakers.”

“You mean my mother and her aunt?” Maggie asked. “You’re not kidding. Oh phooey! I think some people from the wild horse association just showed up. I’ll see you in a couple of hours.”

They hung up and Maggie went to the door. “It’s Gloria and Bubba,” she said, looking up at Justin standing behind her.

“Oh crap, I forgot I told them I’d neuter Benjie today.”

“How long is that going to take?”

“About half an hour. Take over,” he said, handing her the spatula. “I’ll have them come inside the office with me so you don’t have to entertain.”

“You’re a saint,” she said, frowning. “Why do you schedule these things on a Sunday?”
