“What’s happening with the wedding plans?” Katrina asked Annie.

“Chris already mentioned postponing it. Right now, I’m going to put the halt on any plans for a wedding. I can’t even think about it.”

The women looked at her, shocked.

“Because of Beverly?”

“No, because of his wife.Ex-wife. His sons mentioned living with us, and Chris said that was fine. I’m not fine with it. Katrina, you heard the conversation.”

“You won’t marry him because of that?”

“It’s not that. He mentioned delaying the wedding, not me. I just don’t want to live with his kids. That and his ex-wife. Although her husband supposedly returned today. At least I don’t have to worry about her moving in. If you ask me, there’s something fishy going on.”

“With Chris?” Katrina asked.

“Yes. He seems a little too eager to give in to his kids.”

“I agree,” Maggie said. “Forget it. Like I said last night, an extra two adult men when you’re just starting out will put a crimp on intimacy. No.”

“Awful,” Katrina agreed. “Although they are nice young men. I just thought of this, Maggie; they are our nephews. And they’ll be Annie’s stepsons.”

“IfI marry Chris.”

Katrina leaned over and grabbed her hand. “Just stand firm, Annie. Don’t let the threat of them destroy your happiness. They were just talking in passing because the house and property are so wonderful. I can’t see young people wanting to move to a backwater like Cypress Cove.”

“Me, either,” Maggie said. “Leave that to us.”

Laughing, the women reminisced that after Maggie’s escape to Bayou Cottage, within a few months, both of them joined her.

“I would have never met Dave if I hadn’t taken the leap. And I didn’t move here for love, either. I moved here to be close to you two.”

Sighing, Annie had moved because she had gotten pregnant with Stevie and if she wanted to marry the father, she had to leave Pensacola.

“All I want to do right now and is finish my master’s, get my license, and hang out a shingle. I don’t want to think about my kid being abused by his own grandmother, or my boyfriend’s ex-wife dying. I’m just over all of it.”

Maggie laid back on the dock, her hands under her head. The clouds skirted by quickly, masking the sun on and off. It accounted for the cool breeze that washed over her. The whinny sound of a horse got her attention and she raised her head.

“Look who’s here,” she whispered.

The others turned to the lawn and saw the group of wild horses making a daylight appearance in the yard. The little kids were in their fenced-in play yard, delighting in the grazing beasts.

“Aw, they’re so beautiful. What a postcard that would be,” Katrina said.

“Will you two be okay if I saddle up and take a ride?” Maggie asked.

“Go for it,” Katrina said. “We’ll supervise the kiddos and sitters.”

“You don’t have to move from this spot.”

“I’ll go over there if you want me to,” Annie said.

“You can observe from here. Thanks,” Maggie said, hopping up and running down the dock for the barn.

“Do you have any desire to ride?” Katrina asked Annie.

“You’re kidding, right? No way. Oh look, the guys are following her. I guess we’ll be here alone.”

“Dave really needs this time with Chris and Justin. He looks forward to riding on the weekends.”
