“What!”

“Yeah, they couldn’t get her off the perfusion machine and when they finally did, she coded and that was it. I don’t have all the details.”

“I’m so sorry, Chris. Wow, she really went fast.”

“I can’t believe it. My boys are in rough shape.”

“I totally understand. When our mother died, it took Dave and me a year to begin to recover, and as you know, we are still grieving ten years later. It’s good you’re there for them.”

“I forgot our mother died at about the same age with boys the same age. Wow, that’s such a coincidence.”

“Listen, stay in touch. How long will you be gone?”

“I start the new job next week and I want to get into my house before then. I’m expecting her funeral to be this week sometime so as soon as I know, I’ll rent a truck and move my furniture over. It’ll be good for the boys to have something to keep them busy.”

“Are they coming back with you?”

“They are. They’ve already decided. So yeah, my personal life will be in turmoil for a while.”

“Jeez. I’m so sorry, Chris. Let me know if you need help moving though.”

“The boys will do it. You saw their size.”

“They are definitely from our gene pool. I wonder if Val noticed.”

“Ha! I’ll have to call him to let him know about Cindy. Okay, later.”

“Later, Chris. Again, my condolences.” Justin immediately called Maggie. “Where are you?” Justin asked.

“I’m on Dale, back in the woods. I can’t believe my phone is working this far from home. What’s going on?”

“Chris’s ex died!”

Maggie pulled Dale’s reins so he’d stop walking.

“No way! How awful. Is he upset?”

“Oh yeah, worried about his boys. He’s on his way to Mobile.”

“Is Annie with him? She didn’t call me.”

“He didn’t say but I doubt it. Maybe give her a call when you get back to the cottage.”

“I will, Justin. Thanks for letting me know.”

They said goodbye and she turned Dale around to return to the barn so she could call Annie.

“I just heard,” she said. “Why aren’t you with him?”

“He didn’t invite me to go,” she said. “I get it. It’s her family and it would have been weird for me and Stevie to be there.”

“Wow, talk about when it rains, it pours.”

“I guess you must have heard Beverly got arrested,” Annie said, trying to cover her annoyance that Maggie hadn’t called her as soon as she found out.

“Yes, I heard! I’m sorry I didn’t get in touch but Justin insisted on being here for lunch and I have a demanding client to deal with.”

“It’s okay, Maggie. My problems shouldn’t dominate my friends’ lives. I’m so sick of even referring to ex-wives and abused children and wobble boards.”
