“Oh God, I’m gonna barf,” she said, jumping up and running to the waste can chained to a tree. She held her hair back, throwing up morning coffee into the trash.

Maggie poured water from her bottle onto a paper towel and went to Annie, rubbing her back again. Finally, the urge passed and she stood up straight, taking the wetted paper from Maggie and wiping off her face and hands.

“Wash your mouth out,” Maggie said, handing her the water, and Annie took it, sipped it, and spit it out.

“Sorry, you guys, gross. What the hell? I felt weird yesterday, too.”

“I know you’re on the pill, but could you be pregnant?” Katrina asked.

“No, how could I be? I take them faithfully every morning.”

“When’s your period due?” Maggie asked.

“Not for a couple of days. I still have pills to take.”

“Okay, well, don’t be shocked if it doesn’t come. Did your doctor tell you to use a backup birth control while you were on the antibiotic?”

“No! What are you talking about?”

Katrina and Maggie exchanged glances. “Oops,” Katrina said.

“That’s an old wives’ tale that antibiotics will interfere with birth control,” Annie said, near tears.

“True, but weren’t you taking something preventive because one of the dogs at the kennel had ringworm?”

“Yes! An antifungal.”

“Google it on your phone, Annie.”

She quickly dug her phone out of her bag and researched, looking up at her friends in horror.

“Fuck! What I took is one of the few drugs that will interfere with birth control pills!”

“Didn’t Justin give you the script?” Maggie asked. “It’s his fault.”

“Let’s get a pregnancy test and do it now. My specialty,” Katrina said, giggling.

“It’s not funny, Kat!” Annie cried. “What the hell am I going to do?”

“You’re not sure you’re even pregnant, so just chill,” Maggie said. “Kat, do you have a test at home?”

“Of course. We buy them by the dozen.”

“Okay. We’re going to finish our picnic and walk to Kat’s house and you’re going to do a test, today.”

“This brings back memories,” Katrina said, laughing. “Sorry, girlfriend. You were already preggo when we made our trips to Walmart to do the test by peeing in the women’s bathroom. Now we’ll be part of your experience. And when you go to Chris’s tonight, you might have news for him.”

“News he won’t want to hear!”

“He should have kept his dick in his pants then. It’s a shared responsibility, in case you’ve forgotten.”

“Women, let’s not get carried away. She might have a bug for all we know,” Katrina said.

“Well, I can’t sit around here now,” Annie said, getting up from the table again. “I’ll go to the drugstore and get one.”

“Jeez, don’t do that, Annie. You want the whole village to know you bought one before you tell Chris?”

“I guess not. I’m sorry I’m being demanding, but please can we go?”
