“Scouts honor, not a word.”

“Come in and have a seat. We’ll eat.”

“Where’s the baby?”

“In the living room, playing.”

“I’ll wash up and be right down.”

He ran up the stairs to their room, giving her a few more minutes to think. The idea that all of them would try to get pregnant at the same time was ridiculous. It had been a happy accident two years ago. But to purposely plan it? Stupid. Why’d she agree to it?

The shower handle squeaked when it was shut off and the sound echoed throughout the cabin. Justin’s distinctive footsteps above made both Tina and Maggie look at the ceiling.

“Dad,” the baby said, grinning.

He came into the living room, looking for his family, larger than life, and against her will, Maggie gave up. Whatever he wanted, she would do, even have another baby.

“So, what’s the secret?”

“Annie’s pregnant. She did a test at Kat’s house and it was positive, of course. That antifungal drug you gave her can make birth control pills ineffective.”

The shocked look on his face said it all.

“Jesus, how awful. Is she furious with me?”

“She didn’t say, but she’s upset with everything right now so you might end up being the scapegoat.”

“I’ll call her and apologize as soon as you give me the okay.”

“Well, don’t do it yet, please. She needs to tell Chris.”

He grabbed her in a bear hug. “Does this mean we’re going to change our timeline?”

“You mean wait until Lent. Right now, I just don’t know. Is this what I wanted, Justin?”

“I thought it was what we wanted, but maybe it’s just what I wanted. Is that what you’re saying?”

She gently pulled away from him. “Let’s eat.”

He saw the wine bottle open on the table, the food dished up, flowers in the vase on the table.

“This looks nice.”

“Where’s the pecan pie?”

He turned from the table to Maggie and laughed. “You talked to your aunt.”

“I did.”

“I took it back into the clinic and gave it to Harvey to take home. She also gave me rolls that I threw out the window.”

“Okay, well, thank you for not bringing it back here. I feel like I make a lot of demands on you and I’m sorry, but how much compromise does a person have to make in their life?”

“Do you feel like you’re making more compromise than you want to?” Justin asked.

“Well, we’re married and talking about having a second kid, so yes, I do.”

He pulled her chair out, then got Tina and put her in her high chair. “I thought the timing for the baby was due to your friends, not me.”
